Riot Platforms Expands Its Bitcoin Holding

Dec 20, 2024 at 02:30 am

North America's biggest Bitcoin mining operation has acquired 667 Bitcoins at about $101,135 per coin. The total cost for this acquisition is approximately $67.5 million.

Riot Platforms Expands Its Bitcoin Holding

Riot Platforms, North America's largest Bitcoin mining operation, has added to its cryptocurrency portfolio in a big way. The company has acquired 667 Bitcoins at an average price of about $101,135 per coin, for a total cost of around $67.5 million.

The new acquisition brings Riot Platforms' total Bitcoin holdings to 17,429 BTC, worth almost $1.8 billion at today’s market price.

The company raised funds for the acquisition in a lightning-fast move, issuing 0.75% convertible notes with a face value of $594 million within days.

This latest acquisition follows Riot Platforms' recent purchase of 5,113 BTC for about $510 million within days.

The company's strategic acquisitions are part of its broader plan to grow its Bitcoin reserve base, a key component of its long-term strategy in the cryptocurrency mining industry.

Riot Platforms produced 495 Bitcoins in November 2024, operating within its capacity and extracting 495 Bitcoins from the system in one month.

To enhance its operational efficiency, the company is ramping up its hash rates, an effort that aligns with its goal to remain competitive within the evolving cryptocurrency markets.

Through this strategy, Riot maintains its leadership position in the industry. Its partnerships in renewable energy attract environmentally conscious investors, ensuring the company's responsible participation in the sector.

In a move that mirrors MicroStrategy's strategy, Riot Platforms is increasing its Bitcoin holdings amid strong macroeconomic pressures for companies like MicroStrategy, which recently acquired 15,350 additional BTCs at a total value of about $1.5 billion, bringing MicroStrategy's holdings to a high of 423,650 BTCs.

Riot has firmly established itself as a dominant player in the Bitcoin mining arena, boasting a market share valued at over $4.41 billion.

While Riot is best known for its mining activities, this new strategy of acquiring Bitcoin also suggests that the company is now treating the cryptocurrency as an inflation hedge and a long-term investment.

Riot's mining endeavors have made the company a force to be reckoned with in the digital asset industry. And now, with its growing Bitcoin reserves, Riot's presence is set to become even more substantial.
