Filecoin is preparing to deploy one of its most transformative network upgrades to date: Fast Finality (FIP0086: Fast Finality in Filecoin – F3).

Filecoin is set to deploy a major network upgrade called Fast Finality (F3) that will drastically reduce transaction finality times from 900 epochs (about 2.5 hours) to just 2 epochs (under a minute). This upgrade is designed to enhance the speed, efficiency, and cross-chain capabilities of Filecoin, making it a more attractive option for decentralized storage.
Here are the key features of F3:
Faster Transactions: Currently, transactions on Filecoin take about 2.5 hours to be finalized. With F3, these transactions will be finalized in under a minute, enabling near-instant confirmation times. This improvement is crucial for applications that require quick and responsive decentralized storage solutions.
Cross-Chain Integration: Fast Finality will facilitate seamless integration with other blockchains and layer-2 protocols. By reducing transaction finality times to just 2 epochs, Filecoin can align its confirmation speeds with other fast-finality chains, enabling efficient cross-chain bridges and decentralized interoperability.
Optimized Storage Onboarding: F3 will streamline the process of onboarding new storage providers onto the Filecoin network. By accelerating the finality of storage deals, new providers can join the network and begin offering their services more quickly, expanding the decentralized storage capacity and enhancing service availability.
This upgrade is a result of extensive research, development, and testing by the Filecoin engineering team. The team has conducted multiple audits, real-world scenario simulations, and test phases on the Calibration Testnet to ensure network stability during and after the deployment of F3.
Initially, the deployment of F3 was targeted for nv24, but late-stage tests revealed two critical issues that needed to be resolved before the upgrade could be rolled out on Mainnet. These issues have been addressed, and the network is now undergoing final testing in preparation for Mainnet deployment in January 2025.
Network operators and developers can monitor the testing process through dedicated dashboards, and live performance reports are available on the Filecoin Calibration Testnet.
Node operators should expect a temporary bandwidth spike during the bootstrap phase as the network processes about 900 epochs worth of transactions. This surge will last for 5-10 minutes and stabilize once the initial backlog clears.
If any node operators encounter prolonged high bandwidth usage, they should collect f3/gpbft and f3/certexchange logs and report them through the #fil-fast-finality Slack channel for investigation and resolution. The Filecoin team will be continuously monitoring the network and resolving any issues that may arise during and after deployment.
The Filecoin Fast Finality (F3) upgrade is a significant advancement in decentralized storage technology. By reducing transaction finality times by over 99%, Filecoin positions itself as a market leader in blockchain storage infrastructure.
These changes will enable businesses, developers, and service providers to adopt Filecoin more easily, accelerating Web3 adoption and enterprise blockchain integration. Stay informed about Filecoin’s biggest upgrade yet by joining the discussion in the #fil-fast-finality Slack channel or subscribing to official Filecoin updates on their developer forum.
