Renzo's ezETH Plummets, Triggering Speculation and Alarm

Apr 24, 2024 at 10:05 pm

Renzo's liquid restaking token (ezETH) experienced a significant price decline on Wednesday, dropping below $750 on Uniswap due to a combination of factors. The sell-off was likely driven by users seeking to reclaim their ETH in low liquidity conditions and large liquidations of ezETH-collateralized positions.

Renzo's ezETH Plummets, Triggering Speculation and Alarm

Renzo's ezETH Plunges Dramatically, Sparking Speculation and Concern

In a startling market movement, Renzo's liquid restaking token, ezETH, experienced a precipitous crash on Wednesday, tumbling as low as $750 on the Ethereum-based decentralized exchange Uniswap. This significant decline, which represented a colossal discount to its peg to wrapped ether (WETH), has sent shockwaves through the cryptocurrency community.

Analysts attribute the sell-off to a confluence of factors, including users seeking to reclaim their ETH amid challenging liquidity conditions and a wave of liquidations of positions collateralized by ezETH.

Renzo, the second-largest liquid restaking protocol, allows users to restake their ether (ETH) using the Ethereum restaking protocol Eigenlayer. In exchange, users receive Renzo's ezETH, which they can utilize across other decentralized finance (DeFi) applications to generate additional yield.

On Tuesday, Renzo announced the release of its economic model and the upcoming airdrop of its native token REZ, scheduled for May 2. However, the potential loss of airdrop rewards for users who sell their ezETH before April 26 may have further fueled the sell-off.

Hitesh Malviya, founder of the crypto analytics platform DYOR, suggests that users' desire to deploy their ETH on other liquid restaking platforms also contributed to the decline in ezETH's price.

"People were selling ezETH on Uniswap, and because liquidity was low, the slippage caused the price to drop below $700, triggering massive liquidations on Gearbox and Morpho," Malviya stated.

Additionally, the initial price slide was exacerbated by the liquidation of "loopers" or traders who repeatedly used ezETH as collateral to borrow ETH to create leverage. Pseudonymous observer Tommy highlighted the significance of this factor.

Malviya further noted that investor disappointment with the token supply chart, which initially indicated a substantial allocation to the team and investors, also played a role in the sell-off.

Despite the dramatic decline, ezETH's price quickly rebounded, recovering to above $3,000. At the time of writing, it was trading at $3,172 on Uniswap, while ether remained relatively stable at $3,281.

Attempts to contact Renzo for comment have been unsuccessful. The incident has reignited discussions about the risks associated with liquid restaking and the importance of evaluating the underlying liquidity and market conditions.

The cryptocurrency market remains highly volatile, and investors are urged to conduct thorough due diligence and exercise caution before making any investment decisions.
