Apr 26, 2024 at 01:11 am
An "epic sat," an exceptionally rare unit of bitcoin mined in the fourth halving block, has sold for over $2 million. ViaBTC, the crypto mining pool that mined the satoshi, sold it on the crypto exchange CoinEx Global for 33.3 BTC, valued at $2.13 million. The sale marks the community recognition, media attention, and widespread embrace of Bitcoin.

Rare Satoshi from Bitcoin Block Halving Sells for Over $2 Million, Marking a Historic Moment for Cryptocurrency Collectibles
An extraordinarily rare satoshi, the smallest unit of the leading cryptocurrency Bitcoin (BTC), has been sold for an astounding $2.13 million, making history as a highly sought-after digital collectible. This exceptional satoshi was mined in the fourth halving block of Bitcoin, marking a pivotal event in the cryptocurrency's lifecycle.
On April 25, the crypto mining pool ViaBTC auctioned off "Sat 1,968,750,000,000,000" on the crypto exchange CoinEx Global for 33.3 BTC. The sale ignited a bidding frenzy among collectors eager to acquire this rare and coveted piece of digital history.
"CoinEx's partner, the ViaBTC mining pool, has officially mined the 840,000th block," CoinEx Global proclaimed on the satoshi's auction page. "This milestone not only signifies Bitcoin's fourth halving but also includes a block identified as an epic 'Rare Satoshi' by the Ordinals numbering system."
ViaBTC mined the 840,000th Bitcoin mining block at 00:09 UTC on April 20 (around 8:00 p.m. ET on April 19), ushering in a new era in Bitcoin mining. With this milestone, ViaBTC received 3.125 in mining rewards and an additional 37.6256 BTC ($2,401,399) in reward fees.
The satoshi's rarity stems from its position as the first satoshi mined following Bitcoin's fourth halving, which reduced mining rewards from 6.25 BTC to 3.125 BTC. Only four such "epic sats" exist, each associated with the first block mined after a halving event.
The Bitcoin Ordinals protocol, a revolutionary development in the cryptocurrency space, has enabled the assignment of metadata to Bitcoin satoshis, transforming them into collectible and valuable assets. The protocol has imbued satoshis with a unique identity, making them highly sought after among collectors.
The auction of this epic satoshi marks a significant moment for the cryptocurrency community and highlights the growing interest in digital collectibles. The sale underscores the allure of rare and unique digital assets, demonstrating their potential for appreciation and historical significance.
As Bitcoin undergoes future halving events, additional epic sats will be mined, further fueling the demand for these digital artifacts. The upcoming fifth Bitcoin halving,预计于 2028 年 4 月 17 日左右发生,预计将带来与之相关的第五个 epic sat,其稀有性和价值将进一步提升。
The sale of this exceptional satoshi for over $2 million serves as a testament to the growing recognition and value of digital collectibles within the cryptocurrency ecosystem. As the Bitcoin network continues to evolve and mature, the demand for rare and historical digital assets is expected to soar, solidifying their place in the annals of digital history.
