Rare quarters can fetch as much as $19,200. Here's how to spot them.

Some of the coins were made by being “clad,” a process the U.S. Mint explains as having an inner core of metal surrounded by an outer layer of a different metal.

Have you checked the spare change in your pockets, purse, car coin tray or couch recently? It could be worth your while.
Some rare quarters are out there that could fetch as much as $19,200, according to Chronicle Collectibles, a Texas-based business specializing in high-end antiques and collectibles.
Some of particular interest are known as Bicentennial quarters, an iconic special edition coin series minted in 1976, the 200th anniversary of the United States’ founding.
Like most quarters, the Bicentennial coin features the head of George Washington on one side, but instead of the eagle featured on the reverse side of most quarters minted in that era, it has a picture of a Revolutionary soldier drumming.
Pop them into a vending machine or parking meter and they are worth ... 25 cents. However, a closer look could reveal they are actually worth a lot more.
Some of the coins were made by being “clad,” a process the U.S. Mint explains as having an inner core of metal surrounded by an outer layer of a different metal.
But others — the ones more valuable today — were made with 40% silver.
Values of these coins in mint condition can be tens of dollars, while those in the most perfect condition can fetch thousands or even tens of thousands, Chronicle Collectibles reports.
Bicentennial quarters were minted in three different places — Philadelphia, Denver and San Francisco — and are labeled with a “P,” “D,” or “S” to indicate where.
The rarer silver-based coins were minted in San Francisco, and have an “S” on them. These coins also have a more golden color and are slightly heavier than the clad versions.
The average value of a 1976-S silver quarter in very good condition is $95, but the auction record for such a quarter was $19,200 in 2019.
Other versions of the Bicentennial quarter have also sold for thousands at auction. A clad Philadelphia Bicentennial quarter, the most common, and usually with no letter on it, once sold for about $1,200 in 2022. A Denver “D” Bicentennial quarter, also clad, was sold for over $6,400 in 2017.
