Rare 1933 penny could be hidden in your old coin stash - and it's worth a fortune
Aug 09, 2024 at 06:06 am
Some of these rare nuggets can bring in quite the windfall, occasionally fetching far more than their original worth be it through eBay sales or at auctions.
A TikTok user has revealed how to spot a rare coin that could fetch you a small fortune.
Coin enthusiasts will be delighted to learn that some of these nuggets can bring in quite the windfall, occasionally fetching far more than their original worth be it through eBay sales or at auctions.
In light of a 1933 coin recently selling for an eye-watering £140,000, as revealed by the TikTok user, checking what you've got is recommended.
TikTok user @CoinCollectingWizard, who boasts a considerable following of 172,700 on the platform, posted a tantalising video clip where he presented insights into a man's rare coin valuation encounter.
He begins with: "This is my private collection one that's been loaned to as very kindly. It's great because it's such an iconic coin we get lots of visitors coming to see it."
"Usually these coins disappear into safes and never seen again. The last sold in 2016 for a hammer price of around £140,000. Its first ones had sold for many many years and one would imagine if it would come on the market again it would sell for even higher."
Continuing on, the TikTok user explained: "This is the 1933 predecimal penny from the UK, so make sure you check your grandad's old coin collection and keep an eye out for this date.
"Now obviously I don't have the coin, this is a fake copy version."
Wrapping up his narration, he remarked: "Do you have this coin from 1933? If so you are rich, there are other dates to look out for too, but it's never going to be the crazy value of the 1933 penny as seven are known to exist.
"So if you find one, you are extremely lucky. If you found this 1933 penny, what would be the first thing you would do."
The image, captioned "The holy grail 1933 predecimal penny", quickly went viral, garnering over 1,120 likes and sparking a flurry of comments.
One user said: "We had one about 10 years ago but it went missing."
