Rare 2p coin could be worth £1,000 - here's what to look for

A rare 2p coin could be lurking in your spare change - and it's worth a bomb.

We've all been there - convinced a coin we own is worth a fortune at some point.

And usually we end up suffering the bitter disappointment that the coin is actually just worth the value it was intended for.

But there are some extremely rare 2p coins lying around, and if you have one, it might be worth saving...or selling, it's honestly up to you.

A TikTok user named @CoinCollectingWizard has generated quite the following, after becoming an expert in this particular field.

In fact, he's built a following of around 198,000, and after allegedly getting his hands on one of the rare 2p coins - he showed others what to look out for.

In the video, he revealed: "Did you know about the New Pence 2p coin worth £1,000?

"Don't worry though this one is 1971 and not the rare date.

"Want to know what rare New Pence coins to look out for, keep watching.

"After the design changed from New Pence to Two Pence in 1982, a mistake was made during production of a small number of 1983 coins."

He went on to explain how these newer coins were accidentally made with the old inscription 'New Pence' - making them extremely rare.

He added: "If it says New Pence on the reverse instead of the words Two Pence then you have found it.

"If you are lucky enough to find a 1983 New Pence 2p in your change, then it is worth around £1,000.

"You are more likely to find the coin in the 1983 Royal Mint set though as this is where the mistake happened."

Collectors have shared that they found the coin in their collection, but it was once valued at £400.

The error has sky-rocketed the value, and who knows if you hold onto it, one day you could be receiving a lot more than £1000 for it.

One presumably over-the-moon user wrote: "I have it!"

Whilst others shared some important advice to people who think they might have a coin worth more than a few pennies.

One explained: "Never clean coins."

In fact, another suggested it is the 'worst thing to do on a coin'.
