Rare 1p coin from 1882 could be worth a staggering £280 - here's how to spot it

Coin collectors are prepared to pay top dollar for rare pieces.

So if you have any coins that have unusual details – whether it be that a limited number were produced or there was an error during manufacturing – you could actually be sitting on a fortune.

But how can you spot if your silvers and coppers are actually valuable? Thankfully, a money guru at @coincollectingwizard recently highlighted a 1p coin you should look out for.

On TikTok, they urged people to keep their eyes peeled for an 1882 1p from the UK. While the penny looks pretty ordinary at first glance, it’s actually worth £280 due to a tiny detail.

Unlike other varieties, the copper has a H mint mark beneath the date rather than to the left. It really is tricky to spot – so you may even need a microscope to locate it.

One side of the copper coin shows the young head of Queen Victoria, nicknamed the bun head due to the former monarch’s hairstyle. Whereas the flip side depicts Britannia, seated next to a shield holding an impressive trident.

The TikTok user said: “The 1882 with a H mint mark is very valuable. But this does also depend on one condition, if you are lucky enough to find an uncirculated version of this coin, then it is worth over £280.

“I was lucky enough to find this coin in a pre-decimal coin hunt recently. Just remember the important rule with these pre-decimal coins, it all depends on the date.”

The video garnered plenty of attention – and left many rushing to check their change. One said: “Find a penny pick it up and all day you’ll have good luck.”

Another joked: “I’m taking notes,” while a third added: “Got one older”.

Previously, we revealed seven more rare coins that could be in your pockets. Finding one could make you thousands!

They include the 50p Kew Gardens coin – and recently, one sold for nearly £150 on eBay.
