Rare 2p coin could be worth £1,000 - but you need to spot the specific detail

TikTok user @CoinCollectingWizard has highlighted a particular 2p coin that could be worth a staggering amount, but there’s a catch – you need to spot a specific detail.

In his video, he’s seen sorting through coins. In it, he explains: “Searching for the rare New Pence 2p coin because this is what we do.

“This is a 2p coin and after the design changed from New Pence to Two Pence in 1982, a mistake was made during production of a small number of 1983 coins. These coins were actually struck with the old inscription New Pence. While it’s not known exactly how many of these error coins were struck, in 1983 2p coins were only struck for commemorative sets and not issued for circulation.”

According to the Mirror, he then suggests that the rare coins were part of special souvenir sets that never entered general circulation. However, if these sets were opened and the coins spent, there’s a slim chance one might turn up in your loose change.

And if you’re one of the lucky few to discover a 1983 New Pence 2p in your pocket, you could be sitting on around £1,000. But he urged his 209,800 followers to look out for the certain date that will garner the most money.

He summarised: “Remember it’s the 1983 version of the coin which was struck in error and this is the one you should be looking for, so search those 2p machines as you never know.”
