Rare 25p coin that could be worth up to £700 is currently circulating in the UK

Rare coins can be worth an absolute mint if you find a special one.

In recent months, it's been the talk of the town with TikTok user @CoinCollectingWizard delivering the goods on a daily basis. Previously, he shared five rare coins which could make you rich.

Now if that isn't enough to convince you to look through your wallets, a 25p coin which is often mistaken for a 20p is currently a big topic. And it could even land in your pocket, so make sure you check…

The coin is the same shape as a 20p so it could easily throw you off. The 25p coin has a shield on one side and the Sovereign's Orb on the other.

It was made by the Royal Mint, however at the time, authorities hadn't decided whether the new piece would be worth 20p or 25p, although these are often known as a "trial piece" or "pattern coin".

"Experimental coin" and "Royal Mint trial" are printed onto the coin. Now it is believed the rare coin was created in 1981 and used to demonstrate the concept to officials.

Apparently no more than 50 of these 25p trial pieces survived which is why this coin is ultra-rare. Despite there not being many out there, it's still worth keeping an eye on it.

Now one of the 25p coins is about to go on sale and is expected to fetch between £500 and £700. It will be sold through an online sale on September 25 at RWB Auctions in Wiltshire.

The collector's item was found in a pile of change several years ago but the owner decided to keep it in a jewellery box ever since.

A coin expert at RWB Auctions, said: "This is a fascinating piece not just for the rarity but as a glimpse of what our currency could have been.

"20p coins are a fixture in our change now, but the Royal Mint seems to have experimented with various ideas before they settled on the seven-sided coin we all recognise."
