Rare 1p coin with 'unique' feature worth £140,000 – but there's a little catch

A rare 1p coin from 1933 could be stashed away in your grandad's old coin collection - and it's reportedly worth a whopping £140,000. But there's a catch - only seven of these coins are known to exist.

The coin, which was only in circulation for a year, is extremely rare and we can assure you, it's not easy to find. The TikTok user shared a clip about the piece urging Brits to look out for it.

Do you have a stash of old coins at home? You might want to dig them out because certain rare coins are fetching a pretty penny these days - with some worth a hefty sum and others going for more than their original value on eBay or at auction.

The urgency to rummage through your collection just increased as a coin from 1933 has reportedly fetched an eye-watering £140,000, as noted by a TikTok coin enthusiast.

In his latest video to his vast audience of 172,700 followers, @CoinCollectingWizard showcased a man talking about the exceptional sale of this historic coin.

"This is my private collection one that's been loaned to as very kindly," he says in the clip. "It's great because it's such an iconic coin we get lots of visitors coming to see it. Usually these coins disappear into safes and never seen again.

"The last sold in 2016 for a hammer price of around £140,000. Its first ones had sold for many many years and one would imagine if it would come on the market again it would sell for even higher."

The TikToker added: "This is the 1933 predecimal penny from the UK, so make sure you check your grandad's old coin collection and keep an eye out for this date. Now obviously I don't have the coin, this is a fake copy version."

He also shared what the catch was as he told followers there aren't many around. The TikTok user concluded: "Do you have this coin from 1933? If so you are rich, there are other dates to look out for too, but it's never going to be the crazy value of the 1933 penny as seven are known to exist.

"So if you find one, you are extremely lucky. If you found this 1933 penny, what would be the first thing you would do."

The caption, which read: "The holy grail 1933 predecimal penny", received over 1,120 likes and amassed hundreds of comments since it was posted.

Curiosity peaked among enthusiasts; one asked: "How many are actually known of? " prompting a response from the community: "Only 6."

Another chimed in: "We had one about 10 years ago but it went missing."
