Rare 50p coin in your change? This one could be worth up to £2,000

Some 50p coins can be incredibly valuable, fetching a small fortune when sold.

The Royal Mint, which produces the bulk of UK coinage, has certain coins more valuable than others, with experts advising to always check your collection as you might be sitting on a small fortune without even knowing it.

Now, a TikTok user has highlighted a particular 50p piece to look out for.

The account @CoinCollectingWizard, which shares insights into rare coins and boasts 136,800 followers, recently discussed the Aquatics coin from the London 2012 Olympics series issued in 2011.

Although millions of these coins were minted, the rarity lies in a version where the swimmer's face is obscured by water lines.

Finding this distinctive variant could mean it's worth up to £2,000 if you're looking to sell.

The TikToker explained: "There were many of the pieces released in 2011, but this edition with the lines makes it a rare coin to find. Not many have been found."

The video has since attracted a flurry of likes and comments, with one viewer adding: "I have exactly like this one but in Kenya."

Another simply stated: "Got one."

A third shared: "I've got one but not the rare one like the hen's teeth, not many around."

In search of other rare coins? Luckily for you, we recently revealed the six coins which could make you rich, starting with one piece worth an eye-watering £250.

In a video, titled "Rare 50p coins in your change", they advised: "First – the 2017 Royal Shield 50p, this has a mintage of 1.8million, and an uncirculated condition is worth £7, while a circulated is £1.

"Next up is the Jemima Puddleduck 50p from 2016, this has a mintage of 2.1million. An uncirculated version can fetch up to £15, while a circulated one is £8.

"My favourite design is the Issac Newton 50p, it's £8 in uncirculated and £3 in circulated. Now for the holy grail, the Kew Gardens 50p, this has a mintage of only 210,000. A new condition is around £250, and circulated is £145."
