Jul 24, 2025 at 11:30 am

Uncover the secrets behind rare £1 coins worth over £500! From the Nations of the Crown to error coins, learn what to look for and potentially strike gold in your spare change.

Rare Coins Alert: Could That £1 Coin Be Worth Over £500?

Ever wondered if that loose change jangling in your pocket could be worth more than just its face value? In the world of rare coins, the answer is a resounding YES! Specifically, keep your eyes peeled for certain £1 coins that could fetch you a pretty penny – potentially over £500!

The Nations of the Crown £1 Coin: A Floral Fortune?

One coin to watch out for is the 2016 “Nations of the Crown” £1 coin. This coin features an English rose, Welsh leek, Scottish thistle, and Northern Irish shamrock emerging from a crown. While ordinary versions are just worth a pound, a rare version boasts a small floral symbol at the bottom left, just above the letter ‘E’. Only 9,850 of these were minted, making it a sought-after find.

The 2016 Round Pound: A Farewell Worth Finding

Remember the old round £1 coin? The last version of these, also from 2016 and featuring the shield design, can be worth around £30 to collectors. Keep an eye out for these, as only 38,000 were minted.

The Holy Grail: The Error Coin Worth £500+

Now, for the big one! Another version of the 2016 Nations of the Crown coin exists with a tiny, but significant, error. Some coins were minted with the wrong micro engraving of 2017. You'll need a magnifying glass to check the edge of the coin for the date. If you find this error, congratulations! These coins have been known to sell for around £500.

Beyond the £1: Other Coins to Keep an Eye Out For

While we're on the topic of valuable coins, don't forget to be on the lookout for other potentially lucrative pieces. A Brexit 50p coin with the wrong date (anything other than January 31, 2020) could be worth a small fortune, in some instances up to £40,000! An Olympic aquatics 50p from 2011 with lines obscuring the swimmer's face can fetch around £2,000. And a 2014 Lord Kitchener £2 coin missing the words 'two pounds' on the obverse could be worth over £1,000.

Happy Hunting!

So, there you have it! The world of rare coins is full of surprises, and you never know what treasures might be hiding in your spare change. Happy hunting, and may the odds be ever in your favor!
