Rare coin expert Coin Collecting Wizard has got collectors excited after suggesting that certain 20 pence pieces could be worth a "small fortune".

Taking to TikTok, he implored Brits to "stop spending 20p coins" and instead examine them closely.

One from 2008 with no date is particularly sought after.

"If you look closely at your 20p coins you might be able to spot a small fortune," he began.

"Now, normally the date on the 20p is on the reverse right on the crown, but in 2008 something strange happened."

In that year, a new obverse - the shield motif which is still used today - was introduced to replace the old Tudor rose emblem.

However, in a coin error, the new obverse was combined with the original effigy side.

"This mule error saw some undated 20p coins slip into circulation without anyone noticing," the expert explained.

"Now, 20p coins should have the date on the back, but if you check and there's no date on either side then you might be holding the rare one.

"These 20p coins are rare, but not impossible to find. In average condition they sell for £60 plus.

"People are still finding them in their change even 15 years later - so if you pay with cash, check every 20p."
