A limited-edition £2 coin, which is said to depict the playwright’s famous work Macbeth, is being sold for £3,500.

The coin, which dates from 2016, is being sold in Minchinhampton for a best offer on online sales platform eBay.

It is said to depict the playwright’s famous work Macbeth and a rose skull design.

“This rare £2 coin from the UK features William Shakespeare’s Macbeth and a rose skull design,” the item description reads.

“Released in 2016, this coin is a must-have for any collector of British decimal coins.

“The coin has an error around the band of the skull.

“The band/edge is only visible at the top of the skull and disappears at the bottom, creating a small gap, therefore making the coin off centre/unaligned.”

Earlier this year, a Royal Mint spokesperson explained the factors that determine a coin’s value.

“There are occasionally reports of coins selling for large amounts on the secondary market, some of which seem a bit farfetched, so we want to ensure collectors have the right information and pay a fair price,” said Rebecca Morgan, director of commemorative coin at The Royal Mint.

“A coin is ultimately worth what the collector is willing to pay for it, but there are factors you should consider before committing to a price.

“This can include the condition of the coin, its design, its mintage figure and what it’s made of.

“If you have a coin and are unsure about its history, rarity or authenticity, we offer a range of services at The Royal Mint to help establish its likely value and help our customers build a bespoke collection.

“We also have a wide range of resources on our website to help people learn more about the coins in their pockets and coins they might inherit from family members.”
