Raiders GM Downplays Coin Flip Rumor in Draft Selection
May 10, 2024 at 01:15 pm
Las Vegas Raiders general manager Tom Telesco playfully dismissed claims that a coin flip determined the team's selection of Brock Bowers over Terrion Arnold in the 2024 NFL draft, asserting that he uses a "magic 8-ball" for draft decisions. Despite rumors sparked by Arnold's statements, multiple Raiders officials refute the coin flip account, including coach Antonio Pierce and assistant general manager Champ Kelly.

Las Vegas Raiders GM Disputes Coin Flip Account in Draft Selection Process
Las Vegas Raiders General Manager Tom Telesco has refuted claims that the team used a coin toss to determine their selection of Brock Bowers over Terrion Arnold in the 2024 NFL draft.
Allegations of a coin flip emerged from Arnold, who stated on a recent podcast that Raiders Head Coach Antonio Pierce informed him after the draft that the team had employed a "coin toss" method to decide between the two players.
Telesco has emphatically denied these assertions, stating during an appearance on NFL Network's Total Access that he relies on a "magic 8-ball and not a coin" for draft decision-making.
Multiple sources within the Raiders organization have corroborated Telesco's denial. Pierce has clarified to ESPN's Ryan Clark that the team had unanimously decided on Bowers after the first two quarterback prospects, Michael Penix Jr. and J.J. McCarthy, were chosen prior to their turn.
Assistant General Manager Champ Kelly further refuted the coin flip account, stating to The Athletic's Vic Tafur that he "can't confirm that at all." Kelly expressed positive sentiments towards Arnold, stating that he looked forward to following his career but emphasized that the Raiders were firmly committed to Bowers as their selection.
"We drafted Brock, and we're excited to get him here," Kelly said. "And I don't think anyone else in our whole draft room felt any other way."
Arnold's draft status defied expectations, as analysts anticipated his selection earlier. However, this trend was consistent among defensive prospects in the first round, which saw a record-breaking streak of 14 consecutive offensive players and a total of 23 offensive selections.
B/R's NFL scouting department ranked Arnold as the 11th-best prospect in the 2024 draft. His draft wait concluded when the Detroit Lions traded up five spots to acquire the Alabama cornerback with the 24th overall pick.
The Raiders are placing significant stock in Bowers' ability to enhance their passing attack, alongside established receivers Davante Adams and Jakobi Meyers. The 21-year-old has demonstrated consistent excellence in receiving yards for Georgia throughout his collegiate career.
As the Raiders prepare for the upcoming season, the team's decision-making process regarding its draft selections remains a topic of discussion. While some may question the absence of a coin flip in the Bowers-Arnold decision, the Raiders maintain their belief in the meticulous evaluation that led them to select Bowers as their first-round pick.
