Near Protocol's X Account Hacked: Cryptic Messages and Gothic Imagery Surface

May 09, 2024 at 03:32 pm

Near Protocol's official X account was compromised on May 8th, with a series of cryptic tweets using a gothic font and Morse code message decoded as "Darkness is coming." The account name and description were also changed in line with the tweets' content, with no official confirmation from Near Protocol on the incident. The incident is suspected to be a hijack, but some supporters view the tweets as a sign of future developments in the ecosystem.

Near Protocol's X Account Hacked: Cryptic Messages and Gothic Imagery Surface

Near Protocol's X Account Hacked, Cryptic Messages and Gothic Branding Appear

On May 8, 2023, at approximately 6:18 pm UTC, an unusual series of events unfolded on the official "X" Twitter handle of the Near Protocol blockchain. The account, which boasts a following of nearly two million, began posting a string of inscrutable tweets that deviated significantly from its typical content.

One of the initial posts consisted of a 27-second video featuring a cryptic Morse code message. Upon decoding, the ciphertext revealed an ominous warning: "Darkness is coming."

Subsequent tweets, written in a gothic font commonly associated with heavy metal bands, continued the enigmatic tone. The messages declared:

  • "The sun rises in the east"
  • "Take back your thoughts"
  • "Darkness"
  • "Reclaim your sovereignty"

In addition to the cryptic messages, the X account's profile name and description were altered to align with the gothic aesthetic. Screenshots of the compromised X account and its related tweets have circulated widely.

Despite requests for comment, Near Protocol has not yet responded to inquiries from Cointelegraph.

Community Suspects Hijack, While Others Seek Deeper Meaning

The crypto community on Twitter and blockchain investigators have expressed concerns that the X account may have been compromised. However, there has been no official confirmation of this at the time of writing.

Amidst the speculation, some Near Protocol supporters have interpreted the tweets as harbingers of a significant development within the ecosystem. They draw parallels to a similar incident in January, when the X account of crypto data aggregator CoinGecko was breached and used to conduct a phishing scam. CoinGecko subsequently regained control of its social media account.

Near Protocol's Workforce Restructuring

These events follow a recent restructuring within Near Foundation, the developer of the Near Protocol. In March 2023, the foundation announced layoffs affecting 40% of its staff, primarily in marketing, business development, and community roles. The foundation explained the decision as part of a strategic consolidation to focus on "a narrower and higher-impact set of activities."

The foundation stated its commitment to supporting affected employees and assisting them in finding new opportunities within the NEAR ecosystem and beyond. The layoffs were reportedly prompted by an operational review that identified inefficiencies in the foundation's structure.

Towards Decentralization

The workforce restructuring and the cryptic tweets stand as stark reminders of the complexities and challenges faced by blockchain projects as they navigate the path towards decentralization. As Near Protocol evolves, it remains to be seen whether the current turbulence will lead to significant changes or merely serve as a passing storm in the protocol's history.
