A new look at privacy apps in context of Mina Mainnet upgrade

Mina, a blockchain known for its zero knowledge-backed nature, stands out due to several unique characteristics. A key design goal is to maintain a consistent blockchain size of 22 kilobytes through the use of zk SNARK proofs. These proofs are generated off-chain and stored on Mina's mainnet. Notably, Mina serves as the first operational zk rollup, where the blockchain essentially rolls up batches of transactions.

As a constantly evolving 'proof of everything' chain, Mina's off-chain computation involves a combination of sequencing and proof generation. This approach has gained attention from Ethereum layer 2, with the recent Berkeley upgrade adding a layer of programmability to the Mina network.

Decentralization plays a crucial role in the Mina network, often conceptualized as a collection of small rollups. To facilitate application development, frameworks like Protokit are emerging for building essential Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) applications.

While privacy for user transactions is inherent in all zk rollups, the recent rollups highlight the scalability benefits of zktech. A critical aspect of privacy is that proof generation occurs on the user's device, whether a phone or computer. However, Mina's approach to distributed computation extends functionalities across multiple machines.

Beyond privacy, Mina's architecture enables handling large volumes of data, as the raw data is kept off-chain. This capability becomes particularly relevant for higher application layers that often face challenges in maintaining privacy.
