Polygon's zkEVM Backtracks, but MATIC Prepares for Possible Upswing
Apr 11, 2024 at 01:21 am
Despite the initial outage faced by Polygon's zkEVM, Polygon has emerged as a prominent L2 scaling solution for Ethereum. Recent updates suggest that MATIC, Polygon's native token, may be poised for a potential uptrend on the charts, indicated by a breakout of a symmetrical triangle pattern and increased dominance in bridged blockchains. Despite short-term setbacks, Polygon remains optimistic about the future of its zkEVM roll-up, with ongoing development and a roadmap that includes integration with EigenLayer to address inefficiencies in L2 ecosystems and promote growth.

Polygon's zkEVM Faces Setbacks, but MATIC Poised for Potential Uptrend
Polygon has established itself as a prominent player in the Layer-2 (L2) scaling solutions landscape for Ethereum. Through its advanced technology, Polygon addresses Ethereum's scalability challenges, facilitating wider adoption of decentralized applications (dApps) and decentralized finance (DeFi).
However, on March 22nd, Polygon's zkEVM experienced a significant setback. A network outage caused by a reorganization (reorg) on the underlying Layer-1 (L1) Ethereum network led to network discrepancies, invalidating transactions and generating erroneous nonces. The incident underscored the importance of robust security mechanisms and emphasized the need to address technical debt.
Addressing the episode, Polygon co-founder Brendan Farme acknowledged the technical issues encountered in the Polygon ZKM rollup. He attributed these challenges to decisions made in the custom client used in the rollup.
In the wake of these setbacks, MATIC, Polygon's native token, has faced a decline of 4.30% in the past 24 hours. However, recent market indicators suggest that MATIC is poised for a potential uptrend. Analysts have observed a breakout from a symmetrical triangle pattern, indicating a shift in sentiment towards bullishness.
@Defiwayapp reported that Polygon was the most bridged blockchain on April 9th, with an 18% share of cross-chain transactions. Additionally, @three2four7 highlighted the dominance of L2 solutions in on-chain total value locked (TVL), speculating on which L2 project could replicate the 10,000% surge experienced by MATIC in the previous bull market.
Despite recent bearish sentiment, MATIC has consistently maintained an upward trajectory since October 2023. Polygon remains optimistic about the long-term health of its ZKM roll-up, anticipating sustained development and maturity over extended timeframes.
"This is like a move that I think Arbitrum and Optimism both went through... and we're sort of mirroring that process," remarked Farme. "But I'm optimistic and I feel really positive about the long-term health of the ZKM rollup."
AMBCrypto's analysis indicated a negative Market Value to Realized Value (MVRV) ratio of -6.54% for MATIC, suggesting potential losses if tokens are sold immediately. Historically, negative MVRV ratios have often preceded substantial price increases, hinting at an accumulation opportunity ahead of the next rally.
Regarding Polygon's short-term roadmap, Farme outlined plans for upgrading the proving technology and transitioning to EIP-4844, which is expected to significantly reduce proving costs.
Polygon Labs CEO Marc Boiro discussed the significance of integrating Polygon POS into the EigenLayer, aiming to address inefficiencies in L2 ecosystems by simplifying liquidity access for developers. This shift is anticipated to reduce speculative activities and foster the growth of more significant projects.
In conclusion, while Polygon's zkEVM has faced challenges, MATIC is positioned for potential upside. Polygon's commitment to innovation and its focus on long-term development indicate a promising future for the protocol and its ecosystem.
