Polygon (MATIC) Labs CEO Marc Boiron Tips OP Stack Chains To Join AggLayer

Aug 20, 2024 at 05:07 am

Polygon Labs CEO Marc Boiron has argued that chains built with the OP Stack created by competing Ethereum Layer 2 solution provider Optimism Labs will plug into the AggLayer.

Polygon (MATIC) Labs CEO Marc Boiron Tips OP Stack Chains To Join AggLayer

With the frequent launch of Layer 2 chains, interoperability has emerged as a crucial challenge for user experience and innovation, prompting Ethereum scaling solution providers to unveil their interoperability roadmaps in recent months. While the interoperability solutions proposed by these solution providers usually only support projects building with their tech stack, Polygon Labs, the developers of the eponymous Ethereum scaling network, have opted for a different approach.

Polygon is aiming to enable any chain, irrespective of its tech stack, consensus mechanism, or virtual machine, to connect to the AggLayer, the interoperability solution at the core of its aggregated chain architecture. This focus was recently reiterated by Polygon Labs CEO Marc Boiron.

Polygon’s Boiron Tips OP Stack Chains To Join AggLayer

In response to discussions about the fragmentation of Layer 2 interoperability by tech stack on Monday, August 19, Polygon Labs CEO Marc Boiron suggested that even chains built with the OP Stack, created by rival Ethereum Layer 2 solution provider Optimism Labs, will plug into the AggLayer.

Highlighting that the AggLayer is not just for Polygon chains, Boiron cited Movement Labs’ recent decision to connect MoveVM Layer 2 chains to the AggLayer. When asked if any OP Layer 2 chains will join the AggLayer, he said:

While Boiron did not specify the Optimistic rollups that will be joining the AggLyaer, at least one has hinted at considering the move in the future.

Celo To Join the AggLayer?

After months of considering Optimism’s OP Stack, mobile-focused Layer 1 blockchain Celo disclosed in April 2024 that it had chosen the technology for its Layer 2 transition, over Polygon’s CDK and Matter Labs’ ZK Stack. However, Celo suggested that it wanted interoperability with other tech stacks, noting that this could be possible by integrating Polygon’s Type 1 prover, which any chain can leverage with minimal code modifications to plug into the AggLayer.

Projects currently connected to the AggLayer include Polygon zkEVM, OKX’s X Layer, and Astar zkEVM.

On the Flipside

Why This Matters

Increased interoperability among Ethereum Layer 2 chains has been touted to offer a seamless user experience by enabling users to hop between applications and execute transactions without being concerned about the chain they are operating on. The AggLayer is positioning itself to play a pivotal role in this future, which could give Polygon a significant boost.
