Polygon Embarks on a Major Upgrade, Transitioning From MATIC to POL Token
Sep 06, 2024 at 12:02 pm
Polygon, a prominent Layer 2 scaling solution for Ethereum, is set to a embark on a significant upgrade with the transition from its existing MATIC

Layer 2 scaling solution Polygon is migrating from its MATIC token to a new POL token as part of its strategy to enhance network efficiency and introduce new functionalities. Here's a closer look at this development and its implications.
Polygon, a prominent Layer 2 scaling solution for Ethereum, is set to undergo a crucial upgrade as it transitions from its existing MATIC token to a new POL token. This move, starting today, is a key step in Polygon’s broader Polygon 2.0 strategy, which aims to enhance network efficiency and introduce new functionalities.
As part of this shift, POL will replace MATIC as the primary token on Polygon’s Proof of Stake (PoS) chain, handling responsibilities like gas fee payments and staking. This change is also geared towards integrating with Polygon’s zero-knowledge Ethereum Virtual Machine (zk EVM) and Agg Layer, which aims to connect various blockchain systems using Polygon’s technology.
Other updates include a new annual emission rate of 2% for POL, which will be used to incentivize validators and support network growth. POL will also be utilized in processes like block creation, generating zero-knowledge proofs (ZKPs), and contributing to the network’s Data Availability Committees (DACs). These enhancements are set to bolster Polygon’s technology and expand its capabilities.
For holders of MATIC, the migration process will vary depending on where their tokens are stored. Those holding MATIC on centralized exchanges (CEX) will have their tokens automatically swapped for POL. Similarly, MATIC on Polygon’s PoS chain will be converted to POL without any action required from holders.
However, MATIC stored on the Ethereum network or Polygon’s zk EVM layer 2 will need to be manually transferred. Users can do this either through the Polygon Portal Interface or by bridging to Ethereum. A migration contract is available to assist with the transition from MATIC to POL on Ethereum, although Polygon notes that this process is more suited for experienced users.
While there is no specific deadline for the migration, Polygon does advise completing the transfer promptly to avoid any issues. Additional guidance will be provided by Polygon as needed.
Following the announcement of this migration, MATIC's price has seen a decrease of 7% over the past 24 hours, with the token trading at $0.3773 at the time of writing. This price drop might be influenced by broader market trends or market reactions to the migration news.
According to price analysis, MATIC's Relative Strength Index (RSI) is at 34.97, indicating a neutral position where the token is neither overbought nor oversold. This suggests a balanced market sentiment towards the token.
On the technical front, MATIC appears to be trending bearishly, with moving averages across various timeframes signaling a downward trajectory. The Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) is currently at -0.0180, indicating a sell signal. These technical indicators collectively suggest caution, as the technical outlook indicates weaker market conditions for MATIC.
As Polygon transitions to POL, the community and investors will be closely monitoring how these changes impact the network's performance, user experience, and the price trajectory of the new token. This migration marks a significant evolution for Polygon, and its success hinges on smooth implementation and positive reception from the broader crypto community.
