Pi Network Surpasses 10 Million KYC'd Users, Nears Mainnet Launch

Apr 19, 2024 at 05:14 am

Pi Network, a mobile mining platform, has surpassed 10 million KYC-verified users. However, concerns linger about the value of Pi tokens and the project's viability as they cannot yet be exchanged for fiat currency. Despite the milestone, Pi Network aims to launch its mainnet in 2024 upon meeting specific conditions, including 15 million KYC verifications. Analysts express skepticism about Pi Network's potential, citing concerns over its direct selling approach and the potential devaluation of tokens upon mainnet launch.

Pi Network Surpasses 10 Million KYC'd Users, Nearing Mainnet Launch

In a significant development, the Pi Network has announced that it has surpassed 10 million users who have verified their identities through the Know Your Customer (KYC) process. This milestone, achieved on April 16, 2023, marks a crucial step towards the project's goal of launching its mainnet and enabling the traceability of its Pi tokens.

Unique KYC Approach

The Pi Network team has developed a proprietary KYC solution that combines machine automation with crowdsourced, hyperlocal human verification. This approach, according to the team, provides secure, accurate, and efficient KYC while also offering a potential solution for identity verification within other Web3 services.

Lack of Token Tradability Raises Concerns

Despite the progress made in KYC verification, concerns remain about the utility and value Pi Network can provide its users. Currently, Pi tokens cannot be exchanged for fiat currency on cryptocurrency exchanges, limiting their tradability and potential value. As a result, some industry analysts question the project's long-term viability and adoption.

Conditions for Mainnet Launch

The Pi Network team has outlined the following conditions that must be met for the launch of its mainnet:

  • Development of 100 Pi apps
  • Completion of 15 million KYC verifications
  • Fulfillment of various technological, product, business, and legal requirements

The mainnet launch is currently planned for 2024, subject to the fulfillment of these conditions.

Analyst Skepticism

Cem Dilmegani, an analyst at business analytics platform AIMultiple, has expressed skepticism about the project's potential benefits, suggesting that it operates as a direct selling or affiliate marketing system that primarily seeks to drive traffic and sell advertising. Dilmegani also raised concerns about the potential for a significant decline in the token's value upon mainnet launch, as users may rapidly sell their holdings.

Pi Network's Response

In response to inquiries from Cointelegraph, a Pi Network representative acknowledged the project's unconventional approach to blockchain development. The representative emphasized the need for an "Enclosed Network period" before launching the open network to allow for utility building and KYC processing.

The representative also highlighted the project's accomplishments, including the development of a mining app, browser, node application, testnet, mainnet, wallet, and developer platform. The representative maintained that the delay in launching the open network is necessary to ensure a healthy launch and that "anything worthwhile takes time and patience."

Uncertain Future

While the achievement of 10 million KYC'd users is a significant milestone, the lack of token tradability and concerns raised by analysts cast a shadow over the project's long-term prospects. As the Pi Network team continues to work towards the mainnet launch, the cryptocurrency community will closely monitor its progress and evaluate whether the project can deliver on its promises and provide tangible benefits to its users.
