PEPE Token Continues Upward Trend in Early 2024

Aug 31, 2024 at 04:58 pm

Bitcoin's price remains steady at around $60,000, with its dominance in the cryptocurrency market reaching 57.4%. This growing dominance is impacting the anticipated rise of the altcoin season.

PEPE Token Continues Upward Trend in Early 2024

Bitcoin’s price continues to hover around the $60,000 mark, with its dominance in the cryptocurrency market reaching 57.4%. However, the anticipated rise of altcoin season seems to be delayed. According to Glassnode lead analyst James Check, the surge of memecoins is to blame, calling them the “silent killer” of the altcoin market.

During a recent appearance on the Rough Consensus podcast, Check highlighted that investments are being directed towards memecoins like Dogecoin, Shiba Inu, and PEPE. This trend is pulling a significant amount of capital away from more established assets, such as Ethereum, Solana, and Ripple’s XRP. Check estimated that 50-60 cents of every dollar that has been invested in memecoins could have instead been invested in traditional cryptocurrencies.

As a result, the money being pumped into memecoins leaves little room for investment in other altcoins. With capital flowing into these new, hot assets, existing cryptocurrencies will have fewer investment opportunities.

PEPE Token Continues Upward Trend in Early 2024

While the 2021 bull run saw memecoins picking up steam towards the end of the market cycle, current trends show that they are being embraced at the beginning. As memecoins gain popularity, traders are putting in large sums of money to try and profit from these coins.

One example is the PEPE token, which has seen an upward trend in the first half of 2024. On May 15, the trader generated $46 million from an initial investment of $3,000, recording a return of 15,718 times. However, Check noted that there was low trading volume in other parts of the market, with many traders only trading memecoins like PEPE.

According to Check, this trend picked up after the approval of spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) on January 10, with traders using the Bitcoin price rally as an opportunity to invest in risky memecoins. Despite the soaring prices of memecoins like PEPE and Dogwifhat (WIF), Check observed a period where market activity was noticeably sparse, suggesting that traders largely avoided or neglected other potential investment opportunities.

Analysts View Altcoin Decline as Bullish Signal

On the other hand, some traders and analysts are viewing the current altcoin price decline and low trading volumes as bullish signals. According to Luke Martin, a crypto trader, it is the perfect time to buy altcoins. Martin noted that the last time such a situation occurred was with Bitcoin in the summer of 2020, when the price experienced a steep climb from $10,000 to $60,000 over six months after a similar downturn in trading activity.

Altcoins currently at the "sell your house to buy more" level.

Last time $BTC was at this level was exactly 4 years ago in the summer of 2020 when price went vertical from 10k to 60k over the next 6 months.

According to Martin, altcoins are currently at a crossroads, and buying at these levels could lead to large returns soon. He noted that Bitcoin rose from $10,000 to $60,000 within six months after experiencing low trading volumes for a similar duration.
