PayPal Picks Solana for Its Flagship Stablecoin PYUSD, Citing Token Extensions as Key Driver

PayPal Picks Solana for Its Flagship Stablecoin PYUSD, Citing Token Extensions as Key Driver

PayPal's decision to expand its flagship stablecoin, PYUSD, to the Solana blockchain was largely influenced by the network's token extensions, according to Jose Fernandez da Ponte, Senior VP of PayPal's blockchain division.

Initially launched on Ethereum, PYUSD was later introduced on Solana to provide users with "a fast, easy, and inexpensive payment method." The integration aimed to enhance both consumer and merchant experiences.

During the Solana BreakPoint event, da Ponte emphasized that Solana's token extensions played a crucial role in making the network a suitable choice for PayPal's infrastructure.

When asked about the rationale behind launching PYUSD on Solana, da Ponte explained, "The first chain was Ethereum. We all know that Ethereum is not the best solution for payments when we were looking at the primitives."

He further elaborated, "If you're in retail payments, you need to do 1,000 transactions per second at least and you need to do a few things that differentiate a payment from a transaction... There is a ton in addition to that you need to do."

Solana boasts the capacity to handle up to 65,000 transactions per second at minimal fees of just $0.0025. This performance contrasts sharply with Ethereum, which typically processes only 15 transactions per second with fees ranging from $1 to $50.

As a result, transactions on Solana are usually completed within seconds, compared to several minutes for similar transfers on Ethereum. This efficiency has led to a significant increase in Solana's adoption for stablecoin transfers over the past year, according to a study by Artemis.

"So it was very easy when we were looking at where do we go next and what is the right chain for payments," da Ponte remarked, highlighting the significance of Solana's capabilities in facilitating PayPal's payments strategy.

"It's not only the speed, it's not only the throughput that is important. We were talking about token extensions. Token extension was a big good driver for us."

Solana's token extensions, launched earlier this year, provide advanced capabilities for developers to create tokens with unique properties tailored to specific use cases. Developers can integrate complex behaviors into their issued assets while maintaining security and scalability.
