One-of-a-Kind 20p Coin to Shine at Prestigious Auction

Apr 23, 2024 at 11:03 pm

A 1990 20p coin with a unique composition could fetch up to £1,800 at an upcoming auction. Struck on a copper-plated steel blank intended for a foreign country, it is believed to be the sole specimen of its kind. The coin, which was purchased on eBay for £50 in 2017, has been verified as genuine by the Royal Mint and is expected to garner significant interest from collectors.

Unique 20p Coin: A Numismatic Anomaly to Feature in Prestigious Auction

A highly exceptional 20p coin, believed to be the sole specimen of its kind, is poised to fetch a substantial sum at an upcoming auction. This extraordinary coin stands apart from its contemporaries due to a remarkable production error that has endowed it with an unparalleled numismatic value.

Struck in 1990, this unique coin was inadvertently minted on a planchet intended for a foreign currency, rather than the standard bronze blank used for British 20p coins. This anomalous composition has rendered this coin a captivating enigma within the numismatic community.

Collector Alun Barker, who acquired this remarkable artifact on eBay in December 2017 for a mere £50, is now offering it at Tennants Auctioneers in Leyburn, North Yorkshire, on August 9th.

Initially misidentified as a 20p struck on a 1p planchet, the coin's true metallic composition was meticulously confirmed by experts. In January 2018, the Royal Mint, the official producer of British currency, authenticated the coin as genuine, adding further credence to its extraordinary provenance.

Upon uncovering the coin's exceptional rarity, Barker was exhilarated, stating, "I was over the moon... Everyone I've spoken to has never seen anything like it." The coin's uniqueness has fueled speculation among experts, with some estimating a potential sale price of £2,200.

"This 1990 20p has been struck on a copper-plated steel blank intended for one of the other countries the Royal Mint produces coins for," explained a spokesperson for Tennants Auctioneers. "It's a spectacular error and the only one of its kind known."

This astonishing numismatic anomaly is not the only exceptional coin scheduled to go under the hammer at Tennants Auctioneers on August 9th. A 1966 Pattern Crown featuring the effigies of Prince Phillip and Queen Elizabeth is estimated to fetch £1,000 to £1,500, while a 2019 50p coin adorned with Paddington Bear design, recently sold on eBay for an impressive £1,500, highlighting the enduring allure of rare and distinctive coins among collectors.

Among the most sought-after coins for numismatists is the Kew Garden 50p coin, commemorating the 250th anniversary of the renowned botanical gardens in 2009. With only 210,000 ever produced, this coin has become highly coveted by collectors, as evidenced by a recent sale on eBay for over £700.

The upcoming auction at Tennants Auctioneers presents an exceptional opportunity for collectors and enthusiasts to acquire a piece of numismatic history, with the unique 20p coin poised to command significant attention and potentially establish a record-breaking sale price.
