Offchain Labs Unveils Arbitrum BOLD, Fortifying Optimistic Rollup Dispute Protocol
Apr 16, 2024 at 05:02 am
Offchain Labs unveiled Arbitrum BOLD on testnet, a dispute protocol for optimistic rollups on Arbitrum chains. BOLD, short for Bounded Liquidity Delay, permits users to become validator nodes and participate in consensus. It safeguards against delay attacks, where malicious actors intentionally disrupt data flow. BOLD provides a fixed upper limit on Arbitrum state confirmation on Ethereum, enabling a single well-resourced party to counter adversaries without engaging in individual disputes.

Offchain Labs Unveils Arbitrum BOLD, Strengthening Optimistic Rollup Dispute Protocol
Offchain Labs, the driving force behind the Arbitrum ecosystem, has introduced Arbitrum BOLD on testnet, a groundbreaking dispute protocol designed to enhance the security and resilience of optimistic rollups. BOLD, standing for Bounded Liquidity Delay, provides an interactive fraud proof mechanism that can be deployed across Arbitrum chains.
This innovative protocol empowers users to operate validator nodes, contributing to the network's consensus process. Moreover, BOLD incorporates robust defenses against delay attacks, a prevalent cybersecurity threat where malicious actors intentionally obstruct data flow to disrupt system functionality.
"Arbitrum BOLD offers an unwavering guarantee, ensuring a fixed upper limit on the confirmation time of Arbitrum states on the Ethereum blockchain," Offchain Labs declared in a recent statement. "It empowers a solitary, well-equipped entity to fend off accusations from multiple adversaries, eliminating the need for one-on-one confrontations."
Arbitrum has emerged as a prominent Ethereum Layer 2 network, boasting a significant user base measured by active wallets, as previously reported by The Block. In August 2021, Offchain Labs secured $120 million in funding, with Lightspeed Venture Partners leading the investment round.
Rationale for Arbitrum BOLD
"At present, validation on Arbitrum One and Nova through fraud proofs is permissioned due to the vulnerability of their dispute protocols to denial-of-service attacks," explained Offchain Labs upon introducing BOLD in August 2023. "A malicious validator can repeatedly expend funds to hinder assertion confirmation, effectively prolonging withdrawals from Layer 2 to Layer 1 for an indefinite period."
"We have devised an innovative approach to validation, introducing a fixed upper bound of just seven days of additional confirmation delay while eliminating susceptibility to delay attacks," the company elaborated. "Our BOLD protocol renders Arbitrum chain validation safely permissionless, propelling them significantly toward a more decentralized state. This advancement enables a sole, honest validator to emerge victorious in disputes on the Ethereum blockchain against any number of malicious actors."
Benefits of Arbitrum BOLD
Arbitrum BOLD offers a multifaceted array of benefits to the Arbitrum ecosystem:
- Enhanced Security: BOLD strengthens the security of optimistic rollups, protecting against delay attacks and ensuring the timely confirmation of transactions.
- Increased Decentralization: By making validation permissionless, BOLD empowers a wider range of participants to contribute to the network's consensus process, promoting decentralization.
- Reduced Transaction Costs: BOLD's efficiency in dispute resolution can potentially result in lower transaction costs for users.
- Improved Scalability: The increased security and decentralization provided by BOLD can contribute to the scalability of the Arbitrum ecosystem, enabling it to handle a higher volume of transactions.
The launch of Arbitrum BOLD on testnet marks a significant milestone in the development of the Arbitrum ecosystem, bringing it closer to delivering on its promise of secure, scalable, and decentralized blockchain solutions. As testing progresses, the community eagerly anticipates the full rollout of BOLD on the Arbitrum mainnet, ushering in a new era of innovation and growth for the network.
