Nokia is making a move into the world of cryptocurrency security with a new patent designed to enhance encryption for digital assets. The filing hints at the company’s increasing focus on blockchain and cryptocurrency technologies.

Nokia Technologies Co., Ltd. filed a patent application on December 23, 2024, titled “Device method and computer program.” The application, initially filed in June 2024, received the publication number CN 119155674 A by the National Intellectual Property Administration.

The patented system essentially features a “first key” that is used to securely encrypt digital assets, either using symmetric or asymmetric encryption. While symmetric encryption uses a single key for both encryption and decryption, asymmetric encryption utilizes a public and private key pair to limit access to authorized parties.

Encryption is key in safeguarding digital currencies such as Bitcoin, ensuring that only individuals with the private key can access and handle the coins present in a wallet. Without strong encryption mechanisms, digital assets are susceptible to theft and hacking incidents.

In the patented system, after the initial encryption of the assets, a “first network function” receives both the encrypted assets and an index tracking the encryption process. This function is then able to further handle the assets, which could include processing or verification. The system also includes a mechanism to identify the encrypted digital assets, allowing for secure and traceable handling across networks.

Once identified, the encrypted assets are sent to a designated entity for validation or authorization. In this context, the “first network function” acts as a trusted node or service, ensuring additional verification and secure processing. This dual-layer security approach ensures that digital assets remain traceable and are validated by authorized parties before any transaction or transfer.
