NFT Market Plummets: Sales Dive on Major Blockchains
May 12, 2024 at 12:21 am
Non-fungible token (NFT) sales experienced a downturn this week, with a decline of 11.16% compared to the previous week. Bitcoin-based NFTs contributed significantly to sales, totaling over $49 million but faced a 14.65% drop. Ethereum (ETH) and Solana (SOL) NFTs also faced declines, earning $41.55 million and $26 million, respectively. Polygon (MATIC) and Immutable (IMX) rounded out the top five blockchains for NFT sales.

NFT Market Slumps as Sales Plummet Across Major Blockchains
The non-fungible token (NFT) market has taken a significant hit this past week, witnessing a sharp decline in sales across major blockchains. Data from cryptoslam.io reveals a chilling 11.16% decrease in total sales compared to the previous week.
Bitcoin-Based NFTs Suffer Substantial Losses
Bitcoin-based NFTs have borne the brunt of the market downturn, experiencing a staggering 14.65% decline in sales. Despite accounting for over $49 million of the week's total sales, the drop in demand for these digital collectibles has sent shockwaves through the industry.
Ethereum and Solana NFTs Follow Suit
Ethereum (ETH)-based NFTs have also faced a downturn, with sales dropping by 11.7% to $41.55 million. Solana (SOL) NFTs, previously ranked third in sales, have managed to hold their own with a modest 5.73% increase, generating nearly $26 million.
Other Blockchains See Mixed Results
Polygon (MATIC), the fourth-largest blockchain for NFT sales, has seen a 14.2% dip in volume, while Immutable (IMX) has bucked the trend with an 8% uptick, recording $6.49 million in sales.
Top Collections and Notable Sales
Amidst the market turmoil, the Uncategorized Ordinals collection from the Bitcoin blockchain emerged as the top seller this week, bringing in $22.9 million despite a 30% decline in sales. Mythos' Dmarket collection secured the second spot with $5.817 million in earnings.
Individual NFT sales also witnessed notable transactions. Cryptopunk #3619 fetched an impressive $627,991, while Solana's Boogle #064 sold for $192,124. Mushroom #95 from the BTC network garnered $135,096.
Cautious Sentiment Weighs on Collectors
The persistent decline in sales week over week serves as a testament to the cautious sentiment prevalent among NFT collectors. According to Cryptoslam, the number of active buyers in the market has plummeted by 86% to just over 145,000.
Implications for the NFT Market
The recent market downturn raises concerns about the long-term viability of the NFT ecosystem. While enthusiasts have touted NFTs as a revolutionary force in digital asset ownership, the sustainability of the market in the face of such volatility remains uncertain.
Conclusion
The NFT market is at a critical crossroads. The sharp decline in sales across major blockchains and the cautious sentiment among collectors suggest that the industry is facing challenges that could potentially reshape its future trajectory. As the market navigates these turbulent waters, only time will tell whether NFTs will emerge stronger or succumb to the bearish pressures.
