Despite Net Inflows, Bitcoin ETFs See Outflows Amid Robust Interest

Apr 16, 2024 at 04:27 pm

On April 15th, Bitcoin exchange-traded funds experienced outflows of $36.7 million, with Grayscale's GBTC contributing significantly with an outflow of $110.1 million. BlackRock's IBIT, however, attracted $73.4 million, narrowing the gap between the two ETFs to just 37,781 BTC, according to data from Farside. Despite the outflows, Bitcoin ETF inflows remain robust, totaling $12,494.0 billion, indicating a long-term investment perspective among investors.

Despite Net Inflows, Bitcoin ETFs See Outflows Amid Robust Interest

Bitcoin Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) Experience Outflows Despite Robust Net Inflows

On April 15th, Bitcoin (BTC) ETFs experienced a modest outflow of $36.7 million, as per data from Farside. Notably, Grayscale's GBTC fund accounted for a significant portion of this outflow, registering a net outflow of $110.1 million, bringing its total net outflow to $16,382.2 billion.

In contrast to the overall trend, BlackRock's IBIT fund attracted a notable $73.4 million in inflows, bolstering its net inflow to $15,329.0 billion. Fidelity's BTC ETF, meanwhile, recorded two consecutive days of zero net flows, breaking its streak of sustained inflows.

Despite the recent outflows, the overall net inflows across all Bitcoin ETFs remained positive, reaching a total of $12,494.0 billion, according to Farside data.

A similar pattern was observed on April 12th, with IBIT being the only ETF to experience inflows, recording $111.1 million, while GBTC recorded outflows of $166.2 million. This resulted in a net outflow of $55.1 million for the day.

The inflows into Bitcoin ETFs have moderated after a strong three-month period, with IBIT being the sole ETF to sustain inflows over the past two trading days. Despite Bitcoin's recent price decline of approximately 15% from its all-time high, the lack of significant outflows from other ETFs suggests that investors are taking a long-term view.

According to data from Heyapollo, GBTC currently holds 309,928 BTC, while IBIT holds 272,147 BTC, indicating a difference of 37,781 BTC between the two funds.

This development highlights the increasing adoption of Bitcoin and the growing interest in investment vehicles that provide access to the cryptocurrency's performance. As the Bitcoin market matures, ETFs are expected to play a significant role in broadening the accessibility and liquidity of the asset class.
