Munchables' $62 Million Exploit: Insider Job Confirmed?

Mar 27, 2024 at 09:41 am

Munchables, an Ethereum L2 game, fell victim to a $62 million exploit on Blast. However, the team swiftly recovered all user funds thanks to the alleged insider exploiter surrendering the keys. Munchables assured community members that funds are safe, but cautioned against fake accounts soliciting eligibility checks. Blast, a fast-growing L2 solution, faces scrutiny as it prepares for a massive airdrop.

Munchables' $62 Million Exploit: Insider Job Confirmed?

Is Munchables' $62 Million Loss an Inside Job?

Did an Insider Exploit Munchables?

Munchables, the Ethereum Layer 2 Blast-based game, suffered a $62 million exploit last night. However, the team has reassuringly stated that "All funds are safe."

Insider Involvement Confirmed?

Early this morning, the Munchables team revealed on Twitter that a project-linked developer had "agreed to share the keys for the full Munchables funds without any condition." This, along with a statement from Blur and Blast founder Tieshun Roquerre, appears to confirm that the exploit was perpetrated by an insider.

Funds Recovered Through Key Exchange

Within an hour of the initial announcement, the Munchables account reported that the developer had "shared all private keys involved to assist in recovering the user funds." These keys included those for the $62 million, 73 WETH, and the remaining funds.

Multisig Wallet Secures Funds

Blast core contributors transferred the stolen funds into a multi-signature wallet, securing $97 million. Roquerre commended the ex-Munchables developer for their decision to return the funds without demanding a ransom.

Impact on Protocols

Pacman Blur warned that the exploit could affect Munchables and protocols integrated with it, such as Juice Finance. Juice Finance is designed to optimize yield and airdrop eligibility within the Blast ecosystem.

Beware of Scams

Fraudulent Munchables accounts have emerged in response to the exploit, prompting users to check their fund recovery eligibility via malicious links. Exercise caution and avoid interacting with these accounts.

Blast's Rise and Upcoming Airdrop

Blast is a Layer-2 scaling solution similar to Arbitrum, Optimism, and Base. It has witnessed significant growth since its mainnet launch in February, becoming the fourth-largest L2 with $2.7 billion in total value locked. Additionally, Blast is preparing for a $1.3 billion airdrop in May.

Relief for SLERF Developer

The developer behind SLERF, the Solana meme coin project that inadvertently incinerated $10 million of presale funds at launch, expressed relief at the reduced attention on their own blunder.
