Mode Airdrop Triggers Token Price Drop After Distribution
May 09, 2024 at 11:00 am
On May 7th, Mode initiated its airdrop, distributing 5.5% of its total token supply to eligible users. Preceding the airdrop, Mode's Total Value Locked (TVL) saw a surge, while trading volume spiked on the distribution day. However, post-airdrop, the MODE token has experienced a decline, dropping by over 50% since its initial price of $0.1.

Mode Airdrop Initiated, Token Value Declines Post-Distribution
London, United Kingdom. On May 7th, Mode, a Layer 2 (L2) network within the Optimism Superchain ecosystem, commenced an airdrop, distributing 550 million of its native MODE tokens to eligible users. This represented 5.5% of the network's total token supply of 10 billion. The airdrop was based on Mode points earned through user engagement with various DeFi applications, NFTs, and other L2 networks.
Leading up to the airdrop, Mode experienced a surge in its Total Value Locked (TVL), a metric that measures the overall value of assets deposited within its ecosystem. Data from DefiLlama indicated a consistent increase in TVL since February, with a notable spike beginning on May 1st. By May 5th, the TVL had surpassed $500 million.
On the day of the airdrop, May 7th, Mode's trading volume witnessed a significant surge, reaching almost $24 million. However, following the token distribution, the value of the MODE token experienced a decline. Initially priced at $0.1, it dropped to around $0.055 by the end of May 7th. As of the time of writing, the token was trading at approximately $0.048, reflecting an over 11% decline.
According to the tokenomics outlined by the Mode team, investors and core contributors will receive 38% of the total token supply, while the foundation treasury will hold 27%. The remaining 35% is allocated for community and developer airdrops.
Despite the post-airdrop decline in token value, Mode's TVL remains among the largest in the L2 market. Data from L2 Beats indicates that Mode ranks as the tenth largest in terms of TVL, representing over 1.4% of the entire L2 market capitalization.
Analysts attribute the decline in token value to the distribution of a significant number of tokens, which increased the supply and potentially led to selling pressure. Additionally, the overall cryptocurrency market has been experiencing a downturn in recent weeks, which may have contributed to the downward trend.
Mode is actively developing its ecosystem and seeking to expand its user base. The network has recently launched its decentralized exchange, called ModeSwap, and is exploring further integrations with other DeFi protocols.
As the L2 landscape continues to evolve and competition intensifies, Mode will face challenges in maintaining its market share and growing its ecosystem. The success of the network will depend on its ability to attract and retain users, develop innovative products and services, and navigate the volatile cryptocurrency market.
