MicroStrategy, a US software firm, has acquired more cryptocurrency than any nation, accumulating over $14 billion in bitcoin. With 214,400 bitcoins, MicroStrategy has exceeded the holdings of the United States and become the largest corporate bitcoin holder, surpassing Marathon Digital Holdings. MicroStrategy Surpasses Nations as Largest Bitcoin Holder

Washington, D.C. - In an unprecedented move, MicroStrategy, a publicly traded software company based in the United States, has acquired a substantial amount of bitcoin, surpassing the holdings of any single country.

According to the company's latest financial disclosures, MicroStrategy purchased 25,250 bitcoins between January and April of 2024, bringing its total cryptocurrency holdings to 214,400 BTC. This staggering figure represents over 1% of all bitcoins currently in circulation.

"Our unwavering belief in Bitcoin's inherent value and our proven track record as a successful operating company have enabled us to amass such a significant stake," declared Phong Le, MicroStrategy's Chief Executive Officer. "We now possess the largest corporate Bitcoin treasury in the world."

MicroStrategy's acquisition of Bitcoin exceeds that of the United States government, which holds approximately 207,189 BTC valued at $13.5 billion, according to data compiled by Bitcoin Treasuries.

"We meticulously monitor the Bitcoin market and have consistently acquired cryptocurrency at favorable prices," Le explained. "Our average purchase price stands at $35,180 per Bitcoin, which translates to a significant profit given its current market value of around $64,000."

Despite significant market fluctuations, MicroStrategy has remained steadfast in its commitment to Bitcoin, as evidenced by the frequency with which its founder, Michael Saylor, posts diamond hand emojis on social media platforms. This symbolic gesture signifies the company's unwavering intention to hold its cryptocurrency investment through both market upswings and downturns.

"When MicroStrategy embraced Bitcoin as a strategic pillar, we anticipated potential volatility and structured our finances to withstand market adversity," Saylor stated during a 2022 cryptocurrency market downturn.

With the price of Bitcoin once again hovering near record highs, Saylor recently tweeted, "Bet on the winner #Bitcoin."

The recent surge in Bitcoin's value can be attributed to two key events within the cryptocurrency ecosystem:

  • SEC Approval of Bitcoin ETFs: In January, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) approved the first spot exchange-traded funds (ETFs) for Bitcoin. This regulatory development has opened the door for institutional investors to enter the market, bringing billions of dollars in capital.
  • Bitcoin Halving: Every four years, the reward for mining Bitcoin is cut in half. The most recent halving event occurred in March 2024, reducing the block reward from 12.5 BTC to 6.25 BTC. This reduction in supply, coupled with the increasing demand, has fueled Bitcoin's recent ascent.

MicroStrategy's acquisition of a substantial Bitcoin stake underscores the growing institutional acceptance of cryptocurrency and its potential as a legitimate asset class. As the market continues to evolve, the company's decision to invest heavily in Bitcoin is likely to be viewed as a bold and forward-thinking move.
