MicroStrategy's Nasdaq-100 Debut Marks a Crypto Milestone
Dec 14, 2024 at 07:30 pm
MicroStrategy's inclusion follows the removal of Illumina, Super Micro Computer, and Moderna, with Palantir Technologies and Axon Enterprise also joining the index.

MicroStrategy, the Nasdaq-listed business intelligence firm, will join the Nasdaq-100 Index on December 23, marking a significant milestone for crypto-related companies.
The Nasdaq-100 tracks the top 100 non-financial firms listed on the Nasdaq exchange, including Apple, Microsoft, Tesla, and Nvidia. MicroStrategy’s addition to this elite group highlights the growing institutional recognition of crypto.
This move follows the removal of Illumina, Super Micro Computer, and Moderna from the index, while Palantir Technologies and Axon Enterprise are also joining.
Exchange-traded funds (ETFs) that follow the Nasdaq-100, such as the Invesco QQQ, will now include MicroStrategy in their portfolios. This will amplify the company’s exposure to passive investments and deepen its link to Bitcoin’s performance.
Financial analysts view this development as crucial. Rajat Soni noted that MicroStrategy’s stock benefits from Bitcoin’s upward trajectory, creating a cycle where increased passive investment inflows could boost its capital-raising ability, enabling the company to buy more Bitcoin.
“As Bitcoin’s price rises, MicroStrategy’s stock price rises, and its ranking in the NASDAQ rises. [This] means the allocation to its stock rises and more money has to passively flow into MSTR. MicroStrategy can then issue more debt and buy more Bitcoin,” Soni stated.
However, some caution remains. Bloomberg ETF analyst James Seyffart warned that MicroStrategy may face reclassification as a financial entity by March, which could lead to its removal from the index. This reclassification risk arises from the company’s heavy reliance on Bitcoin for its valuation instead of its core business operations.
MicroStrategy’s transformation has revolved around Bitcoin as its main treasury asset. The company now holds over 423,650 BTC, valued at around $43.18 billion. Notably, 40% of this total was acquired in the last month, showcasing its aggressive approach to cryptocurrency accumulation.
Meanwhile, Executive Chairman Michael Saylor credits the company’s success to its Bitcoin-centric strategy. Over the last four years, MicroStrategy’s stock has risen by 124%, outpacing major benchmarks like the S&P 500.
Saylor has highlighted that Bitcoin adoption has strengthened the company’s competitive position, cementing its role as a leader in the evolving financial ecosystem.
