Michael Saylor Calls Bitcoin a Potential World "Superpower"

Michael Saylor, the chairman and CEO of software company MicroStrategy, delivered a speech at The Bitcoin Policy Institute on March 11. In his speech, Saylor called Bitcoin a “superpower” and urged the U.S. to begin pro

curing between one and four million Bitcoins over the next decade.

Pointing out that President Trump recently recognized Bitcoin as the “only truly decentralized cryptocurrency” and that it is a strategic asset for national prosperity, Saylor said that Global capital is migrating to digital networks.

According to Saylor, Bitcoin is the indispensable unit of the future economy and that he believed adopting Bitcoin could solidify U.S. dollar supremacy internationally and that leaving Bitcoin on the table would allow other countries to seize a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that would leave America in the dust.

“Embrace Bitcoin, attract foreign capital. Four thousand trillion dollars of global capital is on the move, transitioning from 20th-century physical and financial assets into the digital realm—specifically, the Bitcoin network. Right now, the unit of digital energy is Satoshi, and digital power is measured in exa-hashes. By embracing Bitcoin, America positions itself to dominate the 21st century financially. Traditional financial doctrines, much like old military strategies, may have once been valid but no longer apply today. The rules that defined the past century are becoming obsolete; the game has fundamentally changed,” said Saylor.

Citing the proposed Bitcoin Act introduced by Senator Cynthia Lummis as a concise and disciplined template for getting there, Saylor said that the coming decade was a digital gold rush and that he proposed a greyscale fasting auto-save mechanism to secure the fortune of America.

As part of its efforts to combat cryptocurrency fraud, the U.S. government has seized $12.6 million in Bitcoin from a Puerto Rico man who was accused of defrauding Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) lenders and collecting unemployment benefits during the pandemic.

The Department of Justice (DOJ) announced on Friday that 34-year-old Edwin Medina-Mendez had agreed to forfeit the Bitcoins, which were valued at approximately $12.6 million at the time of the offense. The court also imposed a $10,000 daily fine on Medina-Mendez for each day he fails to pay the full forfeiture amount.

Medina-Mendez pleaded guilty in December 2023 to one count of bank fraud and one count of mail fraud. He admitted to defrauding PPP lenders by submitting false loan applications for seven restaurant businesses.

According to the DOJ, Medina-Mendez claimed that the restaurants had employees and payroll expenses, but in reality, the businesses were not operational, and he had no employees. He received more than $960,000 in PPP loan funds, which he spent on personal expenses.

Moreover, Medina-Mendez applied for and received unemployment benefits in the amounts of $46,416 from the Puerto Rico Department of Labor and Workforce Development and $13,894 from the U.S. Department of Labor. To obtain these benefits, he falsely certified that he was unemployed and actively searching for work, despite having income from the PPP loans.

The case was investigated by the FBI’s San Juan Field Office and is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Marshal M. C. Durán Benet.
