Memecoins Return with a Roar: Hype or Hazard in the Crypto Sphere?
Apr 17, 2024 at 08:05 pm
The recent crypto bull market has witnessed a resurgence of memecoins, which have both ardent supporters and detractors. Those who favor memecoins view them as a fun and accessible way for individuals to engage in crypto and learn about blockchain technology. They also emphasize the role of memecoins in testing blockchain capabilities and fostering strong communities. Critics, however, argue that many memecoins are scams or have no intrinsic value, leading to gambling-like behavior among investors who may face significant losses.

The crypto market has roared back to life, and with it, a familiar symbol of euphoria has returned: memecoins. Headlines have been dominated by tales of traders transforming modest sums into multimillion-dollar fortunes by betting early on tokens that subsequently soared in value. However, for every substantial winner, there is an unfortunate soul who has lost a significant amount of money by wagering unwisely on the wrong token.
Opinions on memecoins are sharply divided, with proponents extolling their ability to inject a much-needed dose of fun and frivolity into the often-serious crypto sphere, while detractors argue that they serve as a distraction from the transformative potential of blockchain technology.
In a recent episode of The Agenda podcast, hosts Jonathan DeYoung and Ray Salmond engaged in a lively discussion with Andreas Brekken, founder of SideShift.ai, a no-sign-up crypto exchange, delving into the advantages and disadvantages associated with the memecoin phenomenon and its broader implications for the crypto ecosystem.
The Merits of Memecoin Hype
Brekken holds the belief that memecoins serve as "a very straightforward and convenient way for average individuals to enter the realm of cryptocurrency using only their mobile devices" and represent "a perfectly innocuous method of employing cryptocurrency" with companions.
He contends that the surge in memecoins has a net positive effect on the crypto ecosystem by attracting new users to blockchain technology and fostering a deeper understanding of cryptocurrency mechanics. These tokens also serve as real-world testing grounds for the technology:
"We're testing actual functionality because the infrastructure that supports memecoin trading is essentially identical to that used for trading any other asset on- or cross-chain."
According to Brekken, the congestion caused by memecoins on the Solana network, for instance, will drive the network to enhance its speed and reliability, which will ultimately benefit the blockchain in the long run.
When asked about lessons that serious crypto projects could learn from meme tokens, Brekken expressed admiration for the remarkable speed with which memecoins have amassed enthusiastic communities. He further highlighted the practice among many memecoin creators of burning their liquidity provider tokens, effectively removing their capacity to withdraw initial liquidity, as a testament to their dedication to their projects—an approach that could be emulated by other developers in the future.
Memecoin Speculation
It is widely acknowledged that most memecoins lack inherent or practical value. Consequently, many people approach them as a speculative opportunity, driven by the hope of generating life-changing returns. However, a substantial number of memecoin initiatives ultimately turn out to be outright frauds or "rug pulls," exposing investors to the real possibility of losing their entire investment.
Brekken likened memecoin gambling to gambling in Las Vegas or on sporting events: while some individuals enter casinos with a modest bankroll and enjoy a fun evening with friends regardless of the outcome, others wager their entire life savings on a single bet, only to lose it all and be left with nothing but remorse.
He went on to emphasize the importance of taking a broader perspective rather than dwelling on the shortcomings of memecoins themselves:
"Perhaps the more pressing question is why are so many people resorting to gambling? One perspective is that individuals may be gambling because they have lost faith in the system's ability to provide them with a fair chance, given concerns about inflation, the declining value of their savings, and stagnant wages. In other words, it's possible that the surge in gambling is simply a symptom of a financial system that has eroded public trust."
