Memecoin Meltdown: Solana, Coinbase's Base Cryptos Plummet Double Digits

Apr 03, 2024 at 11:00 am

The total market capitalizations of memecoins on Solana and Coinbase's Ethereum layer-2 Base have plunged 12% and 19% respectively over the past 24 hours, mirroring a sharp 4.94% decline in Bitcoin's price. While some analysts attribute the sell-off to Bitcoin's faltering price, others see it as a natural correction following the recent surge in memecoin popularity.

Memecoin Meltdown: Solana and Coinbase's Base Layer-2 Ethereum Suffer Double-Digit Declines

The memecoin market has witnessed a precipitous downturn in the past 24 hours, with the total market capitalization of these playful cryptocurrencies plunging 12% on Solana and 19% on Coinbase's Ethereum layer-2 solution, Base. This sell-off coincided with a sharp 4.94% decline in the price of Bitcoin (BTC), the bellwether of the cryptocurrency market.

Analysts have attributed the memecoin sell-off to a combination of factors, including the volatility of the overall crypto market and the waning appeal of meme-based cryptocurrencies.

"It's not uncommon for memecoins to tank when BTC falters," said a crypto analyst who requested anonymity. "Their value is often driven by sentiment and hype, which can quickly evaporate when the market turns bearish."

Another analyst, Mati Greenspan, founder of Quantum Economics, believes that the humor behind memecoins has simply run its course. "I guess it stopped being funny," Greenspan told Cointelegraph. "The valuations got too high, and the joke got old. It was bound to end at some point."

Solana's Memecoin Market Cap Plummets

Solana's memecoin market capitalization has plummeted by 12% in the past 24 hours, according to CoinGecko. The leading Solana-based meme token, dogwifhat (WIF), has experienced a 9% decline, shedding $3.9 billion in market value.

WIF still accounts for nearly half of the total memecoin market share on Solana, but its open interest on eight major crypto exchanges has dropped significantly, with $2.76 million in leveraged positions liquidated in the past 24 hours.

Base's Memecoin Market Cap Crumbles

Base's total market cap has also taken a hit, dropping 19% to $1.47 billion. The native token of a new Layer 3 network called "Degen" (DEGEN) on Base has been the hardest hit, suffering a 26.14% decline in market cap to $436.5 million.

Bearish Sentiment Permeates the Memecoin Market

Greenspan noted that while Bitcoin is finding support and consolidating, memecoins are experiencing sharp fluctuations. "Bitcoin's retracement is relatively minor, but memecoins are getting slaughtered," Greenspan said.

Greenspan attributed this divergence to the strong correlation between Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. "Bitcoin has a directional correlation with the rest of the crypto market," Greenspan said. "When Bitcoin goes up, they go up more, and when Bitcoin goes down, they go down even more. This relationship is likely to continue for some time."

Charles Edwards, founder of Capriole, a quantitative Bitcoin and digital asset fund, echoed Greenspan's sentiment, stating that memecoins are often subject to amplified volatility compared to Bitcoin.

"These altcoins are high beta on Bitcoin," Edwards said. "If Bitcoin drops 7-10%, as it has recently, you can expect coins like WIF to drop at least 1.5 -2x more." Edwards added that excitement and hype have been major drivers of prices in the Solana and Base ecosystems recently.

"There's been a lot of buzz around SOL and Base," Edwards said. "But I would argue that they have less tangible value than BTC and Ethereum."

Memecoin Market Nears Oversaturation

Crypto analyst Ran Neuner believes that the memecoin market is approaching an oversaturation point. "The memecoin market is getting oversaturated," Neuner said in an April 2 tweet. "There are too many joke coins with no real value."

The recent sell-off in memecoins serves as a reminder of the inherent risks and volatility associated with these cryptocurrencies. As with any investment, investors should exercise caution and conduct thorough research before committing to memecoins or any other cryptocurrency.
