From Meme to Millions: The Kekius Maximus Phenomenon
Jan 02, 2025 at 03:08 pm
The cryptocurrency world witnessed another jaw-dropping story of meteoric gains, thanks to the short-lived buzz created by Elon Musk's playful antics on X

A memecoin trader based in the United States has reportedly turned a $66 investment into a staggering $3 million in just 18 days, thanks to the short-lived buzz created by Elon Musk’s playful antics on X (formerly Twitter). Musk’s brief name change to “Kekius Maximus” — inspired by a mashup of Pepe the Frog and Maximus Decimus Meridius from Gladiator — has propelled one memecoin trader into millionaire territory.
According to data analyzed by Forkast.News from blockchain explorers, the trader purchased 10.17 million Kekius Maximus (KEKIUS) tokens for $66 worth of Ether on December 14. By January 1, as the memecoin surged on the back of Musk’s indirect endorsement, the trader had already sold 2.81 million tokens for 60.3 Ether, equivalent to $205,302 at the time, while still holding a majority of their investment.
This remarkable return represents a 45,900-fold gain, fueled by viral attention and blockchain buzz. According to Lookonchain, a blockchain analytics firm, this unprecedented rise was largely due to Musk’s influence on the meme-inspired cryptocurrency.
Created on December 13, the KEKIUS memecoin initially had modest traction, accumulating a market cap of $11.4 million by December 31. However, Musk’s playful engagement with the Pepe-Gladiator-themed meme saw its market cap explode to $380 million at its peak on January 1, per CoinGecko data.
The frenzy was further fueled by Musk’s AI-generated images of Pepe the Frog as a gladiator in the Roman Colosseum, which garnered 48.2 million views on X, significantly boosting KEKIUS’s momentum.
The KEKIUS rally, however, was short-lived. When Musk reverted his X profile name and picture back to his original identity, the memecoin’s market cap nosedived to $100.5 million. Despite this sharp decline, KEKIUS remains a topic of interest, with 23,600 investors still holding the token, according to CoinGecko.
The wild ride of KEKIUS also highlighted disparities in the memecoin market. While some Solana-based Kekius Maximus-themed tokens launched around the same time, they failed to attract similar trader attention, as observed by DEXScreener data.
Musk’s influence on the cryptocurrency market remains unparalleled, with his actions often triggering massive spikes or crashes in value. KEKIUS joins a growing list of meme coins, like Dogecoin and Shiba Inu, that have seen their fates tied to Musk’s social media behavior.
On January 1, a Tesla Cybertruck explosion outside the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas drew attention, and authorities are investigating it as a potential act of terror, after which Musk stated that the rented Cybertruck was likely targeted by a bomb or fireworks.
