Meme Coins Soar Post-Bitcoin Halving, Hint at Market Shift
Apr 21, 2024 at 04:57 pm
Amidst the market's recent upward trend, meme coins are emerging as the top performers. Shiba Inu, the second-largest meme coin, has surged over 18%, while lesser-known meme coins BONK, FLOKI, and PEPE have witnessed gains of 41%, 25%, and 20%, respectively. These gains have contributed to an 11.5% increase in the overall market capitalization of meme coins, bringing it close to $57 billion on CoinGecko.

Meme Coins Surge Post-Bitcoin Halving, Signaling a Potential Change in Market Trend
In the wake of the highly anticipated fourth Bitcoin halving event, the cryptocurrency market has witnessed a notable shift in momentum, with meme coins emerging as the frontrunners in terms of price appreciation.
Previously, the meme coin sector experienced a surge in value during the early stages of the 2024 bull run, with many assets recording triple-digit percentage gains. However, that trend took a downturn in mid-March as the overall crypto market faced a significant correction.
However, the recent price action suggests a potential reversal of fortune for meme coins. Notably, four of the top-performing assets among the top 100 alternative cryptocurrencies (alts) currently hail from the meme coin category.
Shiba Inu (SHIB), the second-largest meme coin by market capitalization, has emerged as the standout performer among larger-cap alts, registering an impressive 18% increase in price over the past 24 hours. This surge has propelled SHIB to the 12th spot in terms of market cap, with its current value hovering around $0.000027.
Smaller-cap meme coins have also exhibited significant gains. BONK, a Solana-based token, stole the limelight with a remarkable 41% increase, driving its price to over $0.000021. FLOKI and PEPE followed suit, recording gains of 25% and 20%, respectively.
Collectively, the market capitalization of all meme coins has surged by 11.5% in the past day, currently approaching $57 billion on CoinGecko.
These gains are particularly intriguing, considering that Bitcoin's network underwent its fourth halving event just a day ago. Historically, this event has been associated with the initiation of a bull run for all crypto assets. However, the current market cycle has deviated from previous patterns, and some experts have expressed caution regarding the diminishing impact of halvings.
Nonetheless, meme coins appear to be the primary beneficiaries of the post-halving market conditions, at least for the time being. It remains to be seen whether this trend will persist or if the broader market will follow suit.
