Meme Coins Just Got a Major Tailwind From an Unexpected Source

Cryptocurrency prices are notoriously volatile, and meme coins are no exception. But there's a new development that makes the growth of these tokens much more likely than not, at least in the near term.

In fact, there's reason to believe the entire game has changed to support higher meme coin prices broadly, perhaps even permanently. Let's take a look at this big new reason to be optimistic about where these assets are going.

This asset class is now mainstream

On the night of Jan. 17, the meme coin landscape changed forever when then-President-elect Trump launched an official meme coin on Solana. The coin, Official Trump, has the ticker TRUMP and has since reached a market cap of about $8.3 billion.

It's difficult to overstate the significance of this move for the meme coin ecosystem, especially the ecosystem that exists on Solana, the primary blockchain for meme coin investing. When the U.S. president has an official meme coin, meme coins are validated as a legitimate asset class that has staying power and is more than a playground for making jokes with a financial component. In the past, these assets were widely seen as jokes or outright scams whose prices depended solely on greater fool theory, meaning speculators buy on a bet that they can sell for more. Now, meme coins are starting to be seen as something new altogether.

There's no way to avoid the idea that these cryptocurrencies are a growing part of people's self-expression and participation in social, political, and financial life. Accepting that thought opens the door to crafting new types of investment theses, adding some much-needed rigor to the investing process with these coins.

In other words, due to wider adoption and more examples of what meme coins are and what motivates investors to buy them, it's increasingly possible to make well-grounded arguments for which coins to purchase. That's bullish for the sector as a whole because it reduces the feeling of intense uncertainty that was once unavoidable when making a meme coin investment.

Furthermore, with an estimated 200,000 new users joining the Solana ecosystem specifically to purchase President Donald Trump's new meme coin, Official Trump, it's clear that these newcomers have some capital they'll be willing to invest elsewhere in crypto. That should be a major catalyst for established meme coins like Dogecoin and Shiba Inu, and it will probably create buying pressure for rising stars like Popcat.

Popularity doesn't equal safety

Make no mistake: The fact that meme coins just picked up a powerful tailwind from the president's coin launch does not make them safe investments or investments that most investors should be making. Under the best possible scenario, these meme coins are highly volatile from day to day.

Investing in long-standing survivors, like Shiba Inu and Dogecoin, at the wrong time could lead to steep losses just as easily as buying newer plays like Popcat or Trump's coin. Despite meme coins thriving on hype, public attention devoted to any specific coin tends to be very fickle and unpredictable. These are speculative bets.

The safest way to get exposure to the new tailwinds behind the meme coin sector is to invest in Solana because it's what investors need to purchase with dollars before they can buy many of the meme coins they actually want. But before doing that, make sure you have a sufficiently diversified portfolio with safer investments in stocks and index funds and that you aren't investing more than a small portion of your total assets in cryptocurrency.

If you're already holding Solana but not content with your level of exposure to the meme coin sector, it's acceptable to invest in a basket of meme coins, assuming you have already checked off all the numerous higher-priority portfolio goals. Dogecoin, Shiba Inu, and Popcat are acceptable choices since they're very unlikely to go to zero in the short term, and Official Trump may perform well, too. Just understand that you may need to hold on to your investment for a few years or more before breaking even if things go sideways.

Don’t miss this second chance at a potentially lucrative opportunity

Ever feel like you missed the boat in buying the most successful stocks? Then you’ll want to hear this.

On rare occasions, our expert team of analysts issues a “Double Down” stock recommendation for companies that they think are about to pop. If you’re worried you've already missed your chance to invest, now is the best time to buy before it's too late. And the numbers speak for themselves:

Nvidia: if you invested $1,000 when we doubled down in 2009, you’d have $369,816!*

Apple: if you invested $1,000 when we doubled down in 2008, you’d have $42,191!*
