Meme Coins: New Cryptocurrency Class Offers High Returns

Apr 08, 2024 at 04:53 pm

Andrew Kang, co-founder of Mechanism Capital, believes investing in meme coins shares similarities with investing in profitable conventional assets. He proposes a new class of "culture coins" that capitalize on stronger cultural influences and predicts greater profitability compared to established meme coins. Kang cites examples of successful Solana-based meme coins, Jeo Boden and Doland Tremp, which garnered substantial returns from communities aligned with their anti-establishment views.

Meme Coins: New Cryptocurrency Class Offers High Returns

Meme Coins: A New Class of Crypto Assets with Substantial Return Potential

In the ever-evolving landscape of cryptocurrency, a new class of meme coins is emerging that is garnering significant attention from investors. These coins, unlike their predecessors, capitalize on deeper cultural affiliations and have the potential to yield substantial returns, according to Andrew Kang, co-founder of Mechanism Capital.

The Rise of "Culture Coins"

Kang introduced the concept of "culture coins" in a comprehensive post on X, explaining that this category of meme coins would cater to specific brands, political ideologies, religious beliefs, and lifestyles. These coins have the capacity to go viral far beyond the reach of popular meme coins like Dogecoin (DOGE) and Shiba Inu (SHIB).

"Communities with strong values and identities naturally try to convert others to their beliefs and publicly display what it is they love about their lifestyle," Kang wrote. "They are inherently viral. The ideologies of these communities can be purely about politics, religion, consumer goods, sport, way of life or can be a mixture of all."

Examples of Successful Culture Coins

Kang cited the example of Jeo Boden (BODEN) and Doland Tremp (TREMP), two Solana-based meme coins, as recent demonstrations of the success of culture coins. These coins have experienced rapid growth within communities that share "anti-woke, anti-Biden, and right-wing views."

Since its launch in March, BODEN has surged by over 700,000%, boasting a market cap of $475 million and ranking among the top 200 altcoins by market capitalization. Similarly, TREMP, a parody coin of Donald Trump, has gained significant traction since its launch in February.

Consumer Brand Meme Coins

Kang also highlighted the potential of meme coins inspired by successful consumer brands, such as ZYN and MOUTAI, which his firm has invested in. He noted that these coins can leverage the brand's associated lifestyle for added virality.

"Compared to animal coins, coins that represent consumer brands can have the additional advantage of leveraging the associated lifestyle of that brand for added virality," Kang said.

Similar to Conventional Assets

Kang emphasized that investing in meme coins is not fundamentally different from investing in conventional assets that yield substantial returns. He explained that assets with the most significant surges are those that instill the highest level of belief in people.

"The assets experiencing the most significant surges (stocks, real estate, metals, coins, etc.) are merely those that instill the highest level of belief in people," he remarked.

Mixed Opinions in the Crypto Industry

The crypto community remains divided over the future of meme coins. BitMEX co-founder Arthur Hayes recently stated that meme coins are net-positive for their respective blockchains. However, others believe that these coins are speculative and dangerous assets.

Despite the differing opinions, the emergence of culture coins and consumer brand meme coins represents a significant evolution in the meme coin landscape. These coins have the potential to attract a broader investor base and contribute to the growth and diversification of the cryptocurrency market.
