Meme Coin Mania Cools as Crypto Market Corrects
May 16, 2024 at 05:24 pm
Amid a slowdown in the meme stock craze, meme coins have faced a downturn. GME, heavily influenced by GameStop, has crashed by over 44% to $0.006433. Large-cap meme coins like Pepe (ETH) and Floki (ETH) have also declined, losing 4% and 5% respectively. Dogecoin (DOGE), however, remains resilient and has gained 1% to $0.151.

Meme Coin Mania Fades as Crypto Market Corrects
Amidst Bitcoin's recent resurgence, the crypto market has witnessed a significant correction in meme coins, as the frenzy surrounding the GameStop stock craze subdues.
GME Token Plummets
The GME token, a Solana-based cryptocurrency inspired by the GameStop saga, has been hit particularly hard. After surging over 1,240% in the past week, GME has plummeted by more than 44% today, trading at a mere $0.006433. This sharp decline reflects the waning interest in meme stocks and the speculative nature of such digital assets.
Ethereum-Based Tokens Slide Down
Ethereum-based meme coins Pepe and Floki have also experienced significant value erosion today. Pepe, which debuted last year, has shed nearly 4% and currently trades below $0.00001. Floki, another Ethereum-based meme coin, has witnessed a 5% decline, dropping to around $0.0002.
Solana Tokens Lose Steam
In the Solana ecosystem, Dogwifhat and BONK have also faced value corrections. Dogwifhat has lost approximately 4%, trading at $2.78, while BONK has retreated by 2% to $0.000024. However, Dogecoin, the original and most prominent meme coin, has managed to buck the trend and gain 1% today, reaching $0.151.
Meme Coin Volatility
Meme coins and tokens are inherently volatile due to their speculative and often humorous nature. They often surge in value based on social media hype and online communities but can just as easily crash when interest fades.
Return of Meme Stock Mania
The recent resurgence of meme coins can be attributed to the resurgence of interest in meme stocks. Companies like GameStop and AMC Entertainment have seen their share prices soar thanks to the enthusiastic following of online investors.
Roaring Kitty's Influence
The return of Keith Gill, known as Roaring Kitty, has further fueled the meme stock craze. Gill, who initiated the initial GameStop rally in 2021, recently posted online for the first time in nearly three years, reigniting interest in these companies and their associated cryptocurrencies.
Cooling of the Frenzy
However, as the meme stock mania cools off, so too has the appetite for meme coins. Traders are increasingly realizing the risks associated with these highly speculative assets and are cashing out their gains.
In conclusion, the recent correction in meme coins is a reminder of their inherent volatility. As the hype surrounding meme stocks and their crypto counterparts subsides, savvy investors are moving away from these risky assets and towards more established and reliable cryptocurrencies.
