Why Marathon Digital is expanding into mining beyond Bitcoin
Aug 28, 2024 at 07:52 am
Marathon Digital Holdings is pushing the boundaries of cryptocurrency investments, exploring altcoins alongside its well-established bitcoin mining operations.

Marathon Digital Holdings (NASDAQ:MARA) is taking a multi-pronged approach to cryptocurrency. In addition to bitcoin mining, the company is also exploring altcoins, a strategy that has recently seen it venture into mining Kaspa.
In a recent discussion on Yahoo Finance Live, Roundtable anchor Rob Nelson highlighted Sam Price's excitement about Marathon's diversified approach, a point that was further elaborated on by the CryptoLifer host himself.
"I think it's really interesting, especially the way that they're pivoting into some of these smaller altcoins, like Kaspa, which I'm sure a lot of people haven't heard of, but it's something that's really intriguing, especially when you look at the margins that they're getting on some of these altcoins," said Price.
Indeed, Marathon's entry into Kaspa has sparked curiosity among investors, given that the company is known for its large-scale bitcoin mining operations. But as Salman Khan, CFO at Marathon Digital Holdings, explained during the conversation, the company's foray into altcoins is a natural progression that aligns with its strengths.
"We are very focused on bitcoin mining, but we do have the capability to allocate a small percentage of our energy to other coins and we look for coins that are mineable by our machines and that have a high margin, so that we can add value to our shareholders," said Khan.
"The fact is that we have attracted some really serious talent in the last couple of years and we've got some very smart people in the company and one of the things that we have been able to incubate within the company is out of the box ideas," he added.
According to Khan, Marathon has mined over $15 million in Kaspa since September of 2023. By leveraging its existing resources, the company is able to maximize returns without deviating too far from its primary focus on bitcoin.
"We are bitcoiners at heart. We believe in bitcoin. We are not moving away from bitcoin, but we are looking at ways to add value to our shareholders and we believe that this is one of the ways that we can do it," said Khan.
While the company's entry into altcoins may come as a surprise to some, it highlights Marathon's willingness to explore new opportunities within the ever-evolving crypto landscape.
