Marathon Digital Bets Big on Bitcoin, Purchases $100 Million Worth of BTC

Jul 26, 2024 at 02:25 am

Marathon Digital recently bought $100 million worth of Bitcoin. The company now holds more than 20,000 BTC. This stash is worth nearly $1.3 billion at today's prices.

Marathon Digital Bets Big on Bitcoin, Purchases $100 Million Worth of BTC

Major Bitcoin mining company Marathon Digital has disclosed a new purchase of $100 million in BTC. This brings their total cryptocurrency holdings to over 20,000 Bitcoin, currently valued at nearly $1.3 billion. This marks a significant shift in strategy for Marathon, and here's why it's big news for the crypto world.

Marathon Digital Discloses New Bitcoin Purchase

According to a recent SEC filing, Marathon Digital Technologies, Inc. has purchased an additional $100 million in Bitcoin. The company's total cryptocurrency holdings now exceed 20,000 BTC, and with Bitcoin's price at the time of writing, this stash is now worth nearly $1.3 billion.

Marathon's pivot to a HODL strategy, where they keep all the Bitcoin they mine, is also highlighted in the filing. The company's chairman and CEO, Fred Thiel, had this to say regarding their Bitcoin purchases:

“We believe Bitcoin is the world’s best treasury reserve asset. We are encouraging governments and companies to adopt Bitcoin as a reserve asset.”

Marathon's CFO, Salman Khan, further explained their rationale for purchasing more Bitcoin. "Given Bitcoin's current tailwinds, including increased institutional support and an improving macro environment, we are once again implementing this strategy and focusing on growing the amount we hold on our balance sheet,” he said.

The recent decline in Bitcoin's price also presented a favorable opportunity for buying. Marathon, with its strong balance sheet, used this chance to acquire more Bitcoin, believing that holding it will prove valuable over the long term.

Highlighting Marathon's Role in Crypto Market

Marathon's decision to HODL Bitcoin and participate in further market purchases is a testament to the growing trust in Bitcoin as a reserve asset. Major players like BlackRock offering spot BTC ETFs have sparked more interest from investors.

"Adopting a full HODL strategy reflects our confidence in the long-term value of Bitcoin," Thiel added. "With our strong balance sheet and operating cash flow, Marathon is positioned for continued growth and stability."

Marathon Digital's $100 million Bitcoin purchase is a big moment in crypto, signaling optimism for the future. By embracing a HODL strategy, they showcase Bitcoin's status as a valuable asset. This large-scale move may pave the way for increased trust and investment in digital assets.
