MakerDAO's DAI Crushes Stablecoin Competition, Sets New Record
Apr 24, 2024 at 12:30 am
DAI's weekly transaction volume reached a record $240 billion, eclipsing all other stablecoins combined. This surge, primarily concentrated on Ethereum and Polygon, suggests an increase in stablecoin usage during market volatility. While some exchanges saw a slight dip in DAI supply, the recent trend indicates a return of DAI to exchanges, possibly for discounted crypto asset purchases. MakerDAO's $1 billion DAI allocation to USDe's synthetic dollar pool has contributed to DAI's growth, making it one of the top three stablecoins with over $5 billion in market cap.

MakerDAO's DAI Dominates Stablecoin Transactions, Surpassing All Others Combined
Amidst the crypto market's recent volatility and losses, stablecoins have experienced a surge in momentum. However, MakerDAO's DAI stablecoin has emerged as the undisputed leader, shattering records and outperforming all other stablecoins combined.
According to data from IntoTheBlock, DAI's on-chain transaction volume soared to an unprecedented $240 billion last week, eclipsing the combined volume of all other stablecoins. This extraordinary achievement reflects the growing trust and adoption of DAI as a safe haven during market turmoil.
Typically, a spike in stablecoin volume or supply held by addresses suggests a flight from volatility, as investors seek the stability that stablecoins offer compared to other cryptocurrencies. Alternatively, it can indicate a surge in buying pressure as traders send funds to exchanges to capitalize on market dips.
An in-depth analysis of DAI's movement on the Ethereum network reveals that last week's surge in volume coincided with a slight decline in the Supply on Exchanges metric. This suggests that more DAI was moved out of exchanges, possibly as part of a flight to safety from market volatility.
However, at the time of writing, the Supply on Exchange metric has begun to rise, indicating that more DAI is moving back into exchanges, likely to take advantage of discounted crypto assets amidst market recovery. Notably, large transactions involving whales transacting over $1 million have played a significant role in DAI's recent activity.
MakerDAO's DAI stablecoin is primarily employed in decentralized finance (DeFi) operations such as lending and borrowing. On April 8, MakerDAO announced a groundbreaking partnership with Ethena, allocating $1 billion of DAI to Ethena's yield-bearing "synthetic dollar" USDe pool.
This bold move sparked mixed reactions in the market, with some expressing concerns about its riskiness. However, MakerDAO remained steadfast in its commitment to the deal, which has seen DAI's market capitalization soar to over $5 billion, solidifying its position among the top three stablecoins.
Tether's USDT and Circle's USDC continue to hold the top two spots, while USDe's meteoric rise has propelled it into the top five stablecoins within a remarkably short timeframe.
The combination of MakerDAO's recent partnership and the heightened market volatility has likely contributed to the record surge in DAI volumes during last week's market downturns. As the crypto market continues to navigate these uncertain waters, DAI's dominance as the go-to stablecoin is likely to further solidify.
