Litecoin Soars as Premier Crypto Choice for Payments, eclipsing Bitcoin
May 08, 2024 at 12:23 pm
Litecoin remains the top choice for cryptocurrency payments, with its market share exceeding 41% in April, outperforming Bitcoin and other major assets. Despite its advantages as a digital payment method, Litecoin's market valuation is relatively low, potentially signaling an undervalued asset.

Litecoin Surges as Preferred Cryptocurrency for Payments, Outpacing Bitcoin
April witnessed Litecoin (LTC/USD) solidifying its dominance as the cryptocurrency of choice for payments, surpassing all major digital assets, including its progenitor, Bitcoin (BTC/USD).
Dominance in Payments
According to BitPay, the leading global crypto payment processor, Litecoin's share of global payments skyrocketed to over 41% in April, a significant increase from 39% in March. This marks the fourth consecutive month of dominance for Litecoin in the payments arena.
In contrast, Bitcoin's share of payments declined from 25.32% in March to 21.55% in April.
Evolution and Advantages
Although Litecoin was initially conceived as a payment method, it has evolved into a versatile asset, used for both speculation and investment. Dubbed the "digital silver" to Bitcoin's gold, Litecoin has managed to escape regulatory scrutiny in the United States. Many experts consider it to be the only other commodity in the cryptocurrency market besides Bitcoin.
Despite its fundamental strengths and impressive performance as a digital payment tool, Litecoin's market valuation remains relatively low compared to projects with lesser utility. As of this writing, it ranks as the 19th largest cryptocurrency, with a market capitalization of approximately $6 billion, according to Benzinga Pro.
Undervaluation Signal
On-chain analytics firm Santiment has identified a low Network Value-to-Transaction (NVT) ratio for Litecoin over the past year. A low NVT signifies that an asset is relatively inexpensive per unit of on-chain transaction volume, indicating potential undervaluation.
Price Action
At the time of publication, Litecoin traded at $80.97, experiencing a marginal decline of 0.19% over the previous 24 hours, according to data from Benzinga Pro. This level represents a 77% decrease from Litecoin's all-time high reached in May 2021.
Conclusion
Litecoin's continued dominance as the preferred cryptocurrency for payments, coupled with its fundamental strengths and potential undervaluation, suggests that it may be poised for further growth in the future. As regulatory concerns weigh down on Bitcoin and other major cryptocurrencies, Litecoin's ability to evade scrutiny may provide it with a competitive edge in the long run.
