Litecoin Founder Says SEC to Approve Litecoin ETF in the Future

May 01, 2024 at 03:19 am

Litecoin founder Charlie Lee anticipates the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) will approve a Litecoin (LTC) exchange-traded fund (ETF). Lee believes Litecoin's similarity to Bitcoin, which has multiple approved spot ETFs, strengthens his optimism. He suggests that like Bitcoin, Litecoin's categorization as a proof-of-work cryptocurrency could qualify it for a spot ETF. However, Lee acknowledges that demand for an LTC ETF may be lower than for Bitcoin, potentially due to Ethereum's widespread demand for spot ETFs.

Litecoin Founder Says SEC to Approve Litecoin ETF in the Future

Litecoin Founder Predicts SEC Approval for Exchange-Traded Fund (ETF)

New York, April 30, 2024 - Litecoin founder Charlie Lee has expressed his belief that the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) will eventually approve an exchange-traded fund (ETF) for Litecoin (LTC).

During a recent interview with Bitcoin Bros, Lee stated that the approval of a Litecoin ETF is "not a matter of if, but when." He drew parallels between Litecoin and Bitcoin, which has obtained multiple spot ETFs in the United States following the SEC's regulatory nod earlier this year.

Lee's optimism stems from Litecoin's similarities to Bitcoin, both being proof-of-work cryptocurrencies. The classification of Bitcoin as a commodity, he argues, could be extended to Litecoin as well. This designation allows for the creation of spot ETFs similar to those that Bitcoin has secured.

However, Lee acknowledges that demand for a Litecoin ETF may not reach the same levels as those for Bitcoin. He also recognizes that Ethereum spot ETFs face wider demand than LTC, but predicts regulatory hurdles due to Ethereum's transition from proof-of-work (PoW) to proof-of-stake (PoS).

Ethereum's Merge upgrade in September 2022 shifted the network to a PoS consensus mechanism, and recent court filings reveal that the SEC initiated investigations into the potential classification of Ether as a security in March of last year. The SEC has subpoenaed Ethereum development studio Consensys, which in turn filed a lawsuit against the SEC last week challenging its approach to crypto regulation.

Amid this regulatory uncertainty, the SEC has postponed decisions on multiple Ethereum spot ETFs, and experts anticipate potential rejections of these applications in May.

Meanwhile, spot Ethereum ETFs have received approval for trading in Hong Kong and were launched on April 30. While their debut was less explosive than the Bitcoin ETFs in the United States, experts predict accelerated performance in the future.

The news of a potential Litecoin ETF approval has sparked excitement within the cryptocurrency community, which sees it as a sign of growing institutional adoption for Litecoin. However, it remains to be seen when the SEC will grant its approval and whether demand for a Litecoin ETF will match that of Bitcoin.
