Litecoin Core 0.21.4 Released: Vital Security Updates and Functional Improvements
Nov 09, 2024 at 10:18 pm
The Litecoin development team has announced the release of Litecoin Core version 0.21.4, which introduces vital security updates alongside functional improvements.

The Litecoin development team announced the release of Litecoin Core version 0.21.4, which includes critical security updates and functional enhancements. This release aims to strengthen the Litecoin network and address several critical issues.
Among the vulnerabilities fixed is CVE-2024-40202, which could allow remote attackers to carry out a DoS attack by inserting uncommitted transactions into the blocktxn message. This would trigger assertion errors and lead to the node exiting. The patch included in this release verifies that all transactions in the message correspond to the Merkle root of the block, ensuring transaction validity.
Moreover, the update addresses a problem where a peer could delay the propagation of blocks by sending modified blocks, which could erase the download state of other peers and hinder the propagation process in the network. This improvement, backported from Bitcoin Core (dbfc748), reduces block propagation latency to enhance network throughput.
This version also includes a fix for a vulnerability in the miniupnp dependency, where a local attacker could cause an infinite loop and out-of-memory (oom) errors. The issue addressed in this release minimizes the occurrence of network disruptions due to memory depletion.
Additionally, Litecoin Core v0.21.4 updates the -peerblockfilters and -blockfilterindex options to default to "off" when pruning is enabled. This change, along with other test-related improvements, enhances compatibility and reliability, particularly for pruned nodes.
The Litecoin Core v0.21.4 release was made in collaboration with several authors and contributors, including Bitcoin Core developers David Burkett, Hector Chu, and Loshan. Users can download the new version of Litecoin here and are encouraged to report any bugs via the issue tracker on the Litecoin GitHub page.
This security-focused release coincides with increasing prospects for Litecoin's institutional adoption. Canary Capital recently filed the first application for a Litecoin-based ETF with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), paving the way for institutional investors to access Litecoin.
The S-1 filing, made public on Oct. 15, marks a crucial first step, with the firm also needing to submit a 19b-4 form to gain the exchange's approval. The proposed ETF will hold Litecoin and calculate its net asset value daily.
If approved, the spot LTC ETF would open the door for the approval of other cryptocurrency ETFs, with XRP being another candidate once the lawsuit between Ripple and the SEC is resolved.
Meanwhile, as these developments unfold, long-term investors continue to show interest in Litecoin. As reported previously by Crypto News Flash, Litecoin recently surpassed Ethereum in the longest average holding period, indicating that the currency continues to capture the attention of HODLers. At the time of writing, LTC is trading at $73.16, up 3.47% in the past day and 4.28% over the past week. It's worth noting that the coin has declined 42% from its all-time high of $412 registered three years ago.
