Linea Token Launch: Market Cap Dive and Future Prospects
Sep 11, 2025 at 05:50 am
Linea's token generation event sees a rocky start with market cap fluctuations, but future activations offer hope. Is there a use case for the LINEA cryptocurrency?
Linea, the Ethereum Layer 2 network, finally launched its token, but it hasn't been all smooth sailing. Let's dive into what's happening with the LINEA token, its market cap, and what the future might hold.
Linea's Rocky Start: A $550 Million Launch
After being live for over two years, Linea conducted its token generation event (TGE) on September 10th. The initial market capitalization was $550 million, but things quickly went south. Airdrop recipients wasted no time claiming and selling their tokens, leading to a 20% drop. This brought the market cap down to $382 million, with a fully diluted valuation (FDV) of $1.7 billion.
Pre-market trading on Hyperliquid showed even higher expectations, with valuations exceeding $1 billion. However, those numbers didn't last.
Deja Vu: Underwhelming TGEs for Layer 2 Tokens
Linea's struggles aren't unique. Other Ethereum Layer 2 tokens like ARB and OP have seen significant drops from their highs in 2024. Newer tokens like ZkSync and Blast have experienced even steeper declines, falling between 80% and 90% from their peak values.
Technical Hiccups and Airdrop Issues
Adding to the drama, Linea's network experienced a 46-minute block production halt leading up to the TGE. Many users also reported problems claiming their airdrops. Declan Fox, Linea's product lead, explained that a "large bundle" transaction caused a sequencer issue, straining the blockchain's tech.
Linea's Plan
Linea plans to use collected Ethereum fees to buy back Linea and then burn it. Linea explains its allocations to Ethereum companies as “strengthening the ecosystem.”
The Future: Token Emissions and Ecosystem Growth
Despite the shaky start, there's still hope for Linea. A significant portion of the LINEA supply (75%, worth $1.27 billion) is yet to be distributed throughout the ecosystem. The focus will likely shift to Linea's future activations and token emissions as the initial airdrop hype fades.
Question Marks About Usefulness
Linea is not intended to be used as a means of payment for fees, nor as a self-governing governance token.
Final Thoughts: Is Linea Worth the Hype?
The Linea project, as Layer 2 on Ethereum, has achieved quite a bit. But why it needs a LINEA cryptocurrency now isn’t clear. Even if the team isn’t directly rewarding itself with LINEA, major partners are receiving tokens, and there are no plans for private investors to have a say. If you didn’t get your first Linea through the airdrop, we strongly recommend doing your own research.
So, is Linea the next big thing, or just another altcoin struggling to find its place? Only time will tell. But one thing's for sure: the crypto world is never short on drama!
