1913 Liberty Head Nickel Sells for a Record $4.56 Million

In the realm of numismatics, certain coins transcend their status as mere collectibles. They carry the weight of history, are veiled in rarity, and may even display minting errors that render them unique artifacts. August 2018 saw one such coin achieve an astounding price at an auction, cementing its place as one of the most valuable coins.

The 1913 Liberty Head Nickel is a coin that has captured the imagination of collectors. This 5-cent nickel was supposed to be minted by the United States Mint in 1913, but these designs were officially discontinued. However, this particular coin exists and is incredibly rare, with only five known specimens.

The mystery of the coin

The 1913 Liberty Head Nickel was not part of an official series, as Buffalo Nickels were introduced in 1913. Theories suggest that the coin was minted as part of an error or through an unauthorized process. Some believe it was a piece created for a collector, while others believe it was an error by the Mint.

Only five specimens of this coin are known to exist, three of which are in private hands and two are kept in institutions, such as the Smithsonian. The limited number of specimens makes this coin extremely valuable and in high demand among collectors. The coin's condition also plays a role in its high price.

A record price at the auction

At the Stack's Bowers Galleries auction, the 1913 Liberty Head Nickel sold for $4,560,000. This price makes it one of the most expensive coins in history. The sale exceeded all expectations and marks a milestone in the numismatic market. The buyer is Laura Sperber, partner of Legend Numismatics, who now owns this unique piece.

The coin's quality is one of the reasons it reached such a high price. The piece has a PCGS PR66 rating, which means it is in exceptional condition for a coin over 100 years old. The coin's brightness and preservation are main attractions, and the fact that it is an error piece makes it a gem.
