Layer 2 Revolution: Explosive Growth and Shifting Dominance

May 04, 2024 at 10:00 am

Layer 2 protocols (L2s) experienced significant growth in April, with Blast recording an impressive 42% increase in new addresses, while Optimism (OP) dominated in terms of total addresses. Despite a decline in daily active addresses for Arbitrum (ARB), Base, and zkSync Era in May, OP's active addresses increased, indicating potential promising growth for OP and ARB.

Layer 2 Revolution: Explosive Growth and Shifting Dominance

Explosive Growth and Shifting Tides: The State of Layer 2 Solutions

Introduction

Layer 2 (L2) solutions have emerged as a significant force in the blockchain industry, aiming to address the scalability and cost limitations of base layer protocols. Their high network activity has sparked considerable buzz, prompting a comprehensive analysis of their performance and prospects. Coin98 Analytics has released a detailed monthly report shedding light on the state of several top L2s, including Optimism (OP), Arbitrum (ARB), zkSync Era, and Base.

April's Landscape

As of April, OP dominated the field in terms of total addresses, boasting an impressive 138 million. Base and ARB followed with 71.9 million and 22.3 million addresses, respectively. OP also shattered its own record, registering over 450,000 new addresses per day, the highest among all L2s. While OP led the growth, significant increases were noted for Base and ARB as well.

However, Blast made headlines due to its exceptional growth trajectory. Blast's number of addresses surged by an astonishing 42% during April, eclipsing the 2%, 4%, and 12% growth rates of OP, Base, and ARB, respectively. The report also highlighted the impressive transaction volumes of L2s. opBNB reigned supreme with over 872 million transactions, while ARB, zkSync, and OP recorded 472 million, 346 million, and 257 million transactions, respectively. Blast again stole the spotlight, exhibiting the most significant growth rate in transactions, with an 112% month-over-month increase.

The top four L2 protocols by total value locked (TVL) experienced significant shifts in capital flows, with ARB emerging as the leader. Base witnessed a notable 24% month-over-month (MoM) increase, reaching over $284 million. In contrast, Arbitrum suffered a substantial $371 million decline in TVL.

May's Outlook

AMBCrypto's analysis of data from Artemis revealed a contrasting picture for May. While ARB, Base, and zkSync's daily active addresses have declined, Optimism has bucked the trend and seen an uptick. Similarly, Base and zkSync's daily transactions have fallen, whereas Base and OP have experienced slight increases.

Regarding captured value, Base enjoyed the highest revenue at the beginning of May, followed by OP. However, Base and zkSync's revenue charts have shown a downward trajectory, while ARB and OP have gained momentum.

Prospects for the Future

Based on these metrics, it appears likely that OP and ARB may experience promising growth in May. In contrast, Base and zkSync might face some challenges. The rapidly evolving L2 landscape demands constant monitoring and analysis to stay abreast of the latest trends and developments.

Conclusion

L2 solutions continue to play a pivotal role in the blockchain ecosystem, providing scalable and cost-effective alternatives to base layer protocols. The explosive growth of Blast and the shifting dynamics among top L2s in terms of active addresses, transactions, TVL, and captured value highlight the competitive and ever-changing nature of the industry. As L2s strive to innovate and improve their offerings, the future of blockchain scalability remains bright, with ample opportunities for growth and development.
